Maybe didnt search to well, but I did. But Im undergoing an engine rebuild pretty soon, and as Im gathering my parts, I want to know exactly if I need them. So I heard you dont really need the head bolts, but you do need the main bolts. Right? The head bolts are reusable or something like that? And can someone tell me why we need these bolts? and If I should get the head and the main bolts? or just one of the two. Im going 8.8CR and turbo if that plays a roll in it.

alright here we go,

head bolts stretch and can be cruicial to head gasket sealing.. stock bolts can be reused, if your building the motor buy new head bolts! Arp's are only 100$ and they will never stretch! no more headgasket problems...

main bolts are a null factor yes its extra insurance to have uber strong main bolts...

If you can show me a motor that the main line failed because of main bolt stretch i may change my mind, but ive never seen it happen with a block designed as ours. There is no need as long as your stock bolts aren't stretched and fubar...

so they are techincally not needed but if your going for performance and spending the money why take the chance of your head bolts stretching, and blowing a head gasket and having to machine the head again??

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.
If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.

Michael - we can re-use the main bolts... I highly recommend getting the ARP head studs though! I can get them for about $100 direct from ARP. I've got all the part numbers right in front of me too.

When will the Pistons & Rods be here?

I didn't have a chance to work on your engine today, I was busy smoking GSTs at half throttle. emoji

I'll try to get my cell phone turned back on tomorrow... so call me later man.

Thanks Moto emoji perfect explaination. Points for you.

Dougie, the pistons and rods should have been shipped today, by priority mail, so maybe at the end of this week hopefully. Now I just need to get m/r. bearings, oil pump, arp studs, seals, and my block machined. Man thats a lot...lol.

An easy way to tell if bolts need to be replaced is if the manual gives a torque value such as "50 ft-lbs plus 1/4 turn". This means they're TTY (torque to yield) and are designed to stretch... ONCE.

"50ft-lbs plus 1/4 turn" = TTY = Replace. (Preferably with ARPs which are not TTY.)
"90ft-lbs" = Normal Torque bolts = Reusable if within spec.

Also, if there's damage to any one bolt in a set, I usually try to replace all of them. For example, exhaust manifold bolts.
