#59903, "Bad Hesitation and possible Tranny problems due to CAI???"

Let me begin by saying that I searched the forums, and found info relationg intakes and hesitation, but not tranny. So here is my story.

I took my car to the dealer(Faulkner Mitsu, Phila. Pa)(would ecommend no one makes the same mistake I did!)to get my headgasket and valve cover/spark plug gaskets done under my extended warranty(WarrantyByNet). I get the car back, put my AEM CAI back on and load it up to set off for school(Edinboro U.) out in nw penna. While leaving the philadelphia area that night, i begin to hear this strange knocking coming from the left side of the engine compartment, which I believed to be the tranny. It makes the knock when I accelerate after changing gears. I first noticed it shifting into 3rd gear. I shifted into 3rd before I should have so I bogged the engine a bit, it made the knock and wound the gear up. Then it happened again shifting into 1st to take off. I heard it, and immediately pulled over and did a visual check to make sure that nothing was loose. I then tried to get the car to make the noise, but to no avail. Then I got onto the turnpike and headed west. All was good, until I hit the mountainous stretch of the pike. Going up and down the hills brought the knocking back and some major hesitation. I decided to detour to my parents house in hagerstown, md so that I could get the car checked out. I unload it and set out back to phila., to get the stock airbox. From there I go up to Connecticut, to stay with a few friends for a few days. Now, mind you driving from md-ct, I feel the tranny knocking and hesitating. The drive was mostly highway, but in the stop and go parts, it was evident. When I get there, I put the stock airbock back on, and take it to Aamco. I get a call back the next day asking me to come in because the tech is having trouble getting the car to knock or hesitate. I go in, and my car has none of the problems that I experienced. However, sitting in the passengers seat, I now could hear this low rumble as the tech was accelerating, that he described as possibly an airflow problem. Could this all be from my CAI. I had the CAI on from say March until I took my car to the dealer in July, and I had none of these problems. I took it off the get the warranty work done at the dealer, and then all of this starts. What do you guys think? I have changed the spark plugs recently, I have NGK plug wires that are at most 2-3 years old. I canged the fuel filter about 1-2 yrs ago. I could use a new fuel pump, I guess. Does this low rumble I now hear, which seems to go away once the rpm get to a certain point, signal anything like a clogged cat or some other exhaust problem? Do you think the dealer could've messed something up? They let me have my car back without me knowing that they broke 2 pieces of my engine. First, the timing belt cover check window was taped on! Second, the PCV pipe that connects the pcv valve to the valve cover, the valve cover end is all taped up. I don't know why. The dealer never said anything to me, and when I called them back they acted like it never happened. I will get them for that though, when I get back to phila. What input can you guys give?

It's not your CAI. Probably not your trans either. They don't know so much, when they're dying the make nasty grinding noises pretty much all the time, or just one loud bang when the pinion shaft goes through the case.

Can you provide us more detail? How does it sound at idle? Does it knock when you're free-reving the motor? Does the knock increase with engine RPM?

The only things that I can add are that the car would start kinda rough. It would take just a little longer to start than usual. I'm talking just enough to notice a difference. Now since the stock airbox has been replaced, it starts right up, not rough at all. The car idles smooth. No knocking or popping at all. It never did. Only while in motion, and now that doesn't happen. I don't get any of the noises that I was hearing a week ago. I am not getting any engine codes either. Could it be the ecu is having trouble adjusting to the intake? Let me know if there are any other questions that I can answer for ya. Thanks for the response.

No. A CAI isn't some drastic change that the ECU can't handle. It's cake for the thing compared to what some of us put it through.

What you might check is whether or not your CAI was hitting your cam angle sensor (the black plastic diamond shaped thing on the passenger side of the cylinder head, exhaust side). if your CAI was rubbing it or pushing on the harness, you were probably intermittantly losing the cam angle signal, which is what the ECU uses to determine injector timing. No injector timing reference - no injectors fired.

*edit - spelling correction

sorry off topic.. Dino, you asked him if it knocked while free revving it or if it knocked while in gear....

what would the difference be? i understand that in gear it would be under quite a bit of load.... can you explain?

i have had a knock for a LONG time... car has 164k on it and it's knocked since 70 or 80k.... so i noticed you asked this and was wondering if you could explain more....

Sorry for the hijack.... (if you stutter, try a new coilpack and wires) unless the dealer did that and i didn't read it. an overworked cat will smell very sulfer-ish (rotten egg)
