#59762, "Alternator belt, what the hell happened"

Yeah so completely out of no were my alternator belt starts shredding. Its off track and its just keeps shredding if I run the car. Can anyone tell me what the hell is wrong? Is it just ware and tear and I need a new belt? The car has 60,000 on it and I believe its the stock belt. Also how hard is it to install a new belt and can anyone send me a link to a write up of one, thanks
Nick

Sounds like your pulley is messed up or you just had a dry rotted belt. I would let someone else change the belt, unless your a pretty good mechanic. Also get you/them to check the pulley. Get a new belt and if the pulley is bad and you should be good to go.

Check to make sure the pulley is true and not chipped. If the belt was too tight or too loose that would lead to it shredding. It's pretty easy to change the belt, the bolts on the alternator are just a little bit of a pain in the ass to get to.

I couldn't find a write up on the net, but I'll try to explain it to you.

Jack up the front of the car and support in on stands. You don't have to jack it up, but it makes is alot easier. Break the lug nuts loose on the right front wheel loose before you jack it up.

Take off the right(passenger side) front wheel. Remove the side splash guard on the inside of the wheel well.

The adjusting bolt for the alternator is located toward the bottom facing the engine. It's on the bottom where the alternator bolts to the bracket. Loosen this bolt but don't remove it.

If you look down from the top, you have to remove the bolt that is on the top of the alternator. I think there might me a bolt on the side of the alternator bracket that needs to be removed but I'm not sure.

Now you should be able to get the belt off

Install the new belt in the reverse order and use the adjustment bolt(the bolt that you loosened but didn't remove) to put the correct tension on the belt.)

That shoul be everything

last time I looked under my hood you had to remove the PS / AC belt to do the Alternator belt (420A 2gnt DSM)...

still a rather easy job though, all things considered.

Yeah, I forgot that the alternator belt is on the inside, but the ps/ac belt is easy to take off.
