Napa shows that they have a T-belt and tensioner set for $120 which sounds like a fairly good deal just wondered if anyone has used this or knows if its any good.

I got the Napa belt. I don't know about the tensioner though. I don't think it could be that bad. It's a simple part, and obviously someone cared enough about it to make them.

>a tensioner is a tensioner

No. Quality control varies drastically through manufacturers.

But Napa parts have a good rep.

>how do you know this? most people dont make crap

Extreme example:
Body parts. OEM parts cost an arm and a leg, but fit almost perfectly. Cheap body kits take a ton of work to fit properly.

Manufacturers omit quality control to save cost (you can’t reject a part if you don’t inspect it). They also open up tolerances more than they should so the parts always fit together, but this leads to loose fits and poor seals.

as far as engine parts go, they have all been tested and people use them every single day, they work fine. body parts on the other hand yes, shitty manufactuers make shitty products but you cant go wrong with a little tensioner imo....if its from a parts store, it will more than likely be alright.

just my .02

I don't know what you mean by "they have all been tested"

Yes Napa has a good rep and I'm not arguing that.

All I'm saying is that not all parts are created equal and you have to be confident that company has produced a quality part, especially for a part as critical as a timing belt tensioner.

i mean OTHER people have used the exact same product and had no problems. once again....a timing belt tensioner is not rocket science.

If you want to know if it's a good part, ask the guy behind the counter if people are bringing them back. I was in a parts store and I heard one of the guys telling the other they weren't going to stock a certain fuel pump for a Lexus because it was the third one that came back. Parts store can't make any money if parts come back. Something to think about.

I had no idea that Napa carried our tensioner. I had called every place in the book to find one, and NO one had it excepet the dealership. So either Napa has started carrying the tensioner, or they looked up the wrong part. IMO, parts like that should only be bought at the dealership(tensioner, idler pulley, ect.) I have used the Napa timing belt for quite some time, and works/wears excellent. Napa usually carries OEM stuff though, and is of great quality. You should always be careful though..

Napa only carries the parts online but they do carry the tensioner. However they only carry it in a kit just like the dealer does now. I emailed napa and they say that the belt is made by gates and the tensioner is OEM.

Well it sounds like you can only get the tensioner from Napa and the dealer as part of a timing belt kit now.

poop. Well, I guess that eliminates the issues of people not replacing enough stuff when they do a timing belt.
