#59519, "Need Help! Installed JEEP 60MM TB...and what is that whistling noise?"

'Sup fellaz!? I just installed my 60MM Jeep TB and followed MetalJim's write up, everything went well as far as the RPM's are around 800-950 when I start her up so I guess no leaks, drove her around & to the freeway and it was a day & night difference coz it was installed right after my Greddy EVO catback & OBX header. But what's bothering me is the whistling sound during idle, its kinda loud with the hood up and during driving it sounds like a BOV going off on every shift. WHY? TIA

ahhhh you have the turbo whistle!!!!! no worries so far man i've had it seems like forever. People say it's this or that but it's just the TB. It's really pronounced at certain rpms more than others, and is LOUD at wot. It very well could be a gasket problem, or it really could be just how the air flows across the throttle plate at certain angles. Unless you feel a vacuum problem or notice it getting prounouncly worse then i would let it be and enjoy the BOV and spoolin noise it makes. It scares away the lil hondas, that fly around and pester me all the time.

Its the fake BOV that a Jeep 60mm TB creates. hahha.

How come you all got that mod perfectly, and meanwhile, mine, after all my hours of working on it, will not work right.

That mod owned me twice already and I'm stil its bitch.

Yeah Cereal 5's did that too before he was boostin. He let me drive it because of the B&M so as I was pulling out of the parking lot I was like "WTF is that noise?". He just laughed and told me that it was the TB and said it was really normal.

Don't worry about it, i think. I get the same noise with my Modern Performance 60mm TB with my AEM V2. I could only describe the noise as a sharp (SHOO) between shifts and then theres a strange whistle SSSS when you have the throtte pedal at a certain position, kinda sounds like a exhaust leak. But I love the sound of the engine when Im straight out hauling at WOT.

It's normal for the MB tb's, and very pronounced with a CAI.

To tell ya the truth, its either the butterfly flate vibrating, or the air going through the modified jeep TB. I had the same thing, and i coulda sworn it was coming from the butterly plate shaking.

I would bet if you bored your intake manifold to match the 60mm tb (which it doesn't) you wouldn't have that whistle...just a thought.

Yeah, it could be the air hitting a sharp edge of the intake and going into a swirling pattern.

mine does it and my tb and intake mani are stock not even ported. It only does it in gear and in motion, kinda makes me sway to the idea it's something to do wwith the throttle butterfly plate hitting the air. Cause some guys don't have the whistle, change the TB and then get the whistle. Then some guys have the whistle stock to Aftermarket and lose the whistle. It could be a vacuum leak but evidence leads to our TB.

my cheesy $90 autozone intake does the whistling alone... play with it enough and you can have fun controlling the "shhhhhhh" (well, before it gets droned out by the noise my intake does at WOT... RRROOOOORRR)

think of it as pretending you have a turbocharger at less throttle, and 4 barrel when you floor it. hey, I can imagine, right? emoji

Yeah, it doesn't matter about porting the intake. I think Toney did that as well and still had the whistle.

My best guess is that it has to do with the outlet for the idle air circuit. It's the sqaure shaped air hole that dumps air past the throttle plate. The thing about it is that in "Jeep" configuration the throttle plate actuates opposite of the "2gnt" configuration - with the leading edge of the throttle plate moving towards the idle outlet as opposed to the leading edge of the throttle plate moving away from the idle outlet. The reason I suspect this is because of the way the whistle only happens at certain RPMS accompanied by certain throttle positions.

I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done to get rid of the whistle....but I kind of like the whistle, so I haven't really tried to shut it up.

That is what I was thinking too, but with the gains felt after the Jeep TB install and $70 in materials including the TB I wouldn't complain.. emoji

Thanks for all the input guys!! emoji

If this thing makes a ton of noise at WOT on an NA Eclipse, what kind of noise will it make on a Turbo 420A?

It's not at WOT. It only happens at certain RPM throttle position combinations.

The best I can describe it is that it's somewhere around 10-15% throttle at ~2500 RPM or so. Then, as the RPM increases - you have to increase the throttle to keep the whistle going. At about ~4500 RPM it may be somewhere around the 20-40% throttle. If the throttle is too closed, or too open the whistle doesn't happen.

After you get used to how it works, you can drive around without it whistling much if any. On the other hand, if you throttle it just right, you can make it sound like the car is spooling - kind of. The whistle doesn't really change pitch as RPM increases like a turbo does. On mine at least - there are 2 distinct tones. A lower piched one and a higher piched one. The lower piched one is easier to "make happen". The higher piched one is a bit harder to control with the throttle - and more or less just happens every once in a while, but usually only for a short time.
