Well Im at that time unfortunately. The dreaded timing belt change at least Ive dreaded it. Ive basically decided that Im going to just replace the belt, the tensioner, the tensioner pulley, the water pump and while Im down there Im swapping my stock crank pulley for an AFX UDP. Since Im not really making any change with the cams ie not removing them shouldnt I basically be able to just take everything apart pull the old belt put the new one on and replace the parts. I guess my question is will I really have to even touch the cams as far as aligning them shouldnt they stay in alignment unless I were to remove them. TIA for all replies

take your time when doing the timing belt, make sure you line things up right, and set the tension of the belt right......get a haynes manual and check out vfaq, plenty of options located there to give you a good start. Good luck with it bud, run into any problems give us a ring here on the board, plenty of people here including myself can provide assistance.

i'm doing mine as we speak. without a water pump tho. i just got goodyear gatorbacks. i hear they are the best. go to carparts.com and buy custom belts. the one's on sean gordons site are apparently not totally acurate. i'll put mine on in a couple days and give you the RIGHT numbers. i'm puttin an afx on as well, thanks to thedawg for hookin me up! PROPS! just hope it gets hear really soon. i got the timing belt(serpentine style), ps, ac, alt belts two of them are combined forget which ones. i got two idler pulleys cuz the tensioner is the same from bob kise. i admit, very nice guy. the person taking orders told me that if i wanted two idler pulleys, then thats what he'll get me! didn't care cuz it wasn't any of his buisness. lol! no water pump, cam seals, tensioner for me.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.

I think that you guys should pony up the extra money for a tensioner and a water pump. Not replacing these items is a lot like saying "hit me" when you have a king and a 9 card in blackjack. Just not playing your cards right.

The Chiltons manual says to take off the back side of the timing belt cover to get to the water pump. Tell me this isn't true!

It is true, but once the front timing cover is off, the rear isn't too bad to get off. Just make sure that the cam bolts are broken loose before you try this, as the gears will hold in the rear cover. After that, the water pump is 4 10MM bolts, as far as I remember. I would also replace the cam seals once you have the cam gears and rear timing cover out of the way.

aaahhh fuck! How the hell do you get the cam gears off. I'm doing this the weekend after this one and now I'm dreading it too.

I for one always fuck something up the first time I do it, and this is not something I wanna fuck up. I think I've got everything down except for the cam gear removal and install. I need details for this shit. I've read 3 writeups for the timing belt change and all the cam gear shit seems so vague. Also, if I'm gonna have to take them off, I might as well replace them with adjustable ones. Please fill us in on the details about this part of the project.

How much should I expect to pay for tensioner and water pump? Does Bob Kise have these?

close to 100$ for tensioner and under 50$ for the idler pulley

cam gears u need to break loose the bolt on them and unscrew it remove cam gear not to hard...

when timing the motor i recomend removing teh valve cover and making sure both holes in the cams are pointing up...

Yeah I had planned on doing it around that time anyways dirty. . Everytime I start one of these projects the cost start out low and then they just keep going up and up and up lol.

DEFINETLY replace the water pump while you're in there. I'm half through doing my head gasket and replacing valves becuase my water pump seized up and prevented the timing belt from moving thus making it snap and then causing the pistons to hit the valves. Its worth replacing a $40 dollar water pump (price at autozone) to ensure that you don't do this whole job plus some extra again in 10,000 miles. In my opinion

To break the cam bolts free, before you remove the timing belt, put an 18MM wrench on the exhaust cam, and an 18MM wrench on the intake cam. Holding the exhaust cam steady with the closed end wrench, loosen the intake cam bolt by turning it counterclockwise. Don't remove this bolt just yet, only break it loose so that it will come out by hand later. To do the exhaust cam, put an 18MM wrench on the cam bolt, and a 19MM socket and ratchet on the crank bolt (a wrench won't fit, unless it is offset), and turn the exhaust cam bolt counterclockwise, holding the crank steady. Once again, do not remove the bolt yet, just break it loose. It will probably take a good deal of torque to break it loose, especially if the motor has never been apart before. Once it is broken loose the slightest bit, it will probably come off by hand. At this point, resume your timing belt removal, by pulling the crank pulley.

how many foot lbs are the cam gears torqued to?

we are doing my t-belt and hg now, but we ran into a problem we can't get the crank bolt out, eben with an impact any suggestions.....
