#59238, "changing head gasket"

I'm pretty close to taking my head off. I've got everything off but on cam gear (its pressed against the stupid frame) but now I have a question. How will I know how to line the cams up? There is a TDC mark at the bottom of the engine but I don't see anything up at the cam gears? Does that litte pin that goes into the gam gear have to be pointing up or something?

Thanks,

Dean.

They only go on one way, just don't mix the gears up, there is a slight difference between the mark on the intake and exhaust.

Yeah but I turned the cams when I wasing taking the cam gears off. Are you saying that the cams naturally rest in the right position?

pull the valve cover off and there are 2 holes in the cams they should both point up 1 pin on the cam gear up one down..

Bill

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

The timing mark on the cam gears is a little tiny notch cut into the outside edge. At TDC, both notches will be facing each other. The tiny dowels on the cams will be intake? up, exhaust? down.

The timing mark on the crank is a little triangle on the 2" sprocket that lines up with another triangle on the oil pump. You must have the big black crankshaft pulley removed to see this mark.

Use a straitedge to exactly line up the cam gear bolts and the two timing notches.

Check timing AFTER you have tensioned the belt... the tensioner likes to pull the cam gears back, putting you off 1 degree.
