We are pretty sure my intermittent smoking problem is coming from a leaky valve seal somewhere (maybe more than one?). When I let the car idle for extended periods of time, say 5 minutes or more, once I get on the throttle again, it willow billow smoke for a few blocks (grayish/white, but oily as hell) and then just peter out and go away.

run4cvr and I were thinking maybe at idle there's not enough vacuum to seal the valve properly, and once I get on it, it manages to do okay, but I'm concerned I may end up dropping a valve into my fresh new bottom end and that is no good.

So how likely am I to see major damage from this in the near future? Can I wait a couple months? I have been taking things kinda easy on it, but sometimes Daisy just begs to be whipped and I wind her up to the 6 grand mark. I could really use some advice on this as $$$ is extremely tight and I also have a CV failing on me, so I need to budget wisely.

my friend had the same problem in his 86 cutlass.... for him he was running too rich, and all of the leftover stuff was gathering up in his catalytic converter, and then when he'd get on it it'd do the same thing....

then again, his was a carburated V8 with all of the emissions stuff and the computer ripped off of it. and an edelbrock carbureator

I"m having the same problem as you just I don't have hella smoke coming out. Just when I start the car all this water and black sooty stuff blast out of the exhuast.

What you vacuum? Mine will be like around 18 but the needle will start to vibrate back and forth indicating a valve problem. I came to the conclusion it was the valve seals but there's really no way to fix it with the head on so I gotta take it off that means new head gasket and all boooo.

so since I didn't get the head rebuilt when I did the bottom end I'm just gonna rip that head off and take it to a machine shop and get it rebuilt.

You know hades, if I had a turbo, we'd practically be borthers here. I too didn't touch the head when I did the high comp rebuild and I'm hoping to get some mad drifting vids of my own here before too long (need the $$$ for new tires before I waste the threadbare shoes I'm rolling now).

I haven't got a gauge on the vac yet, but I don't think we're getting the same thing smoke wise. My smoke is gray and only occurs when the car's been idleing for any long times. No water and it's fairly light, but it smells like oil big time.

I need some head work and, yes, that means new HG too. WAHHHHH!!! :o
