#58711, "Engine Cutting on and off while driving, tach jumps all over"

I need some real help here. I was driving down the highway today and i start to notice that my tach. was starting to get real erratic. It Started jumping from 2000 to like 4000 rpm while the car was at like 4500. As the night went on, the car started to cut in and out like i was turning it on and off real fast. It almost seems like the computer is loosing the signal for engine rpm. Do you think it could be a cam or crank sensor? The crank sensor is new but the cam sensor has 104000 miles on it. Please let me know what you think.

possibly. I was having bad ignition problems with only like 2 cylinders running. My coilpack was bad so that was replaced and the mechanic who worked on it also said that the cam and crank sensors tend to go bad too so both those were reaplced. no problems now. could be a loose wire though but who knows. i say change the cam sensor anyway

could be bad wiring somewhere...which really could be anywhere but its possible there is a loose wire or bad wire causing that to happen. not sure what you could do to fix it other than taking it somewhere. maybe someone else on here knows.

i dont know if its a problem with yours or not, but my ECU was going out while my car went through all that. mine would shut off, but popping the clutch would start it back up for another minute or two. kinda fun going 6 miles to the shop with your car messing up like that ;/

Sounds like the ecu to me, do the key on off thing and read your trouble codes. If you get a 12 I'd be on the ecu being bad.

Well i found the problem finally. I have adjustable cam gears on my car and the exhaust side gear came loose and advanced the timing by 11 degrees. I t was screwing up the tach because ithe cam sensor is on the exhaust cam. Thanks for all of your help.
