#58291, "Can I use a Palm "Zire" to datalog?"

I got one this weekend. My aunt gave it to me. She got it for free with some michelin tires, and I was wondering if I could use it or not. it would be sweet if I could, but I wouldn't be suprised if I couldn't, since it's probabaly just a cheapie.

Absolutely NOT. It has a USB port and you need a Palm Pilot with a SERIAL port. It is a good PDA for personal/business use though, that's what I use mine for. I also have a Palm m105 that I use for datalogging... I bought it from one of my employees for $20.00

I bought a Sony Clie SJ33 for personal use and a Sony Clie SJ22 for datalog. I like the sonys, high resolution, good backlight, and nice screen size with plenty of other options. Alot for the money. The SJ22 is $180 and the SJ33 is $220. Only difference is the SJ33 has speakers and can play MP3's, also has a faster processor. Oh and like he said, Palm Zire will definetly not work. The SJ33 is incompatible too.

Yeah, i figured it wouldn't since it is only 100 bucks. do you think we could put together a list of all of the ones that will work? that would be sweet, but there might be one floating around someplace. what all does it have to have to work? ANY pda with a serial port won't work will it? whats a good. decent priced, high resolution one, that would work with datalogging? thanks guys.

whats the difference between that and the m100?

how bad is the resolution on the m100? what won't I be able to see that I would if I went with one of the sonys?\

there are tons of m100s on ebay, mostly refurbished ones, with a 90 day warrantee. i dont care. if I can get it for like 40 bucks, thats alright with me. any thoughts?

If its just a matter of needing it to have a serial port (rs232) you can just get a usb to serial adapter. Compu USA carries these adapters, there like $30. Might be cheaper than buying a different palm.

heres a really stupid question though. The data loggers I've been seeing people talking about on here are just palm pilots? I always figured there were some other thing that was built specifically for cars like a code scaner.

its a palm based PDA with a special cable that plugs into the serial cable and there is a program that you run on the palm to read and log the data. http://pocketlogger.com/?page=prod&prod=obd2 here is a link to the info page for the version for our cars

The PocketLogger kicks unholy ass. I have been fortunate enough to borow run4cvr's many times to figure out whats wrong with my car, with my Dad's Neon...

Problems it's isolated for easy fix (est cost of repair at satan):

random misfire in 2GNT (60 diagnostic, 40 labor, 50 new wires = $150)
stuttering/misfire in Neon (60 diagnostic, 50 labor, 50 new wires, 150 new coil pack, 40 new CPS = $350)

Considering you can buy the PocketLogger for about $175, I'd consider it one of those things that pays for itself. Very impressed. Very much wanting to get my own.

Oh yeah, and I got a M100 for it for just under $50 off eBay. Works just fine. emoji
