#57932, "Cheaper Route? Buy Used Block or Whole Used Engine?"
Well, ive been whining to everyone on the board for some help, cuz I need my car. I spun a/some bearings, and my friends told me to just buy a new engine and put that in. But i was wondering if i just got a used block and put my head on it, would that work? Would that take more time and money? Im not going to be doing any of this, for i do not have the tools or place to do it. So would it just be cheaper to buy a whole used engine and just drop that in? Sorry i know this sounds like my previous post. 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 10th Anniversary OZ Edition Check Out My Site For Pix http://mywebpages.comcast.net/EclipseRaceR/MyEclipse/VIS%20CF%20Hood/

Just buy a complete engine. You should buy one with "low" miles from some one w/ a good rep and will waranty it for at least a short time. If you buy the short block and use your head it will cost alot more in labor for the shop to swap your head and crap. Good luc

I would say, if you can get the whole engine, go for it. Rebuild whatever your budget allows, then just keep the rest around and rebuild as you can. That would be the best route.
I blew my entire budget on rebuilding the bottom on my car. By having a second engine around (John and I scored that 95 ESi, remember) we were able to get the 95 block machined and ready to go once we pulled mine out. Unfortunately, I did nothing to the head, and after it sat with no oil in the AZ heat for about a month, I think some of my valve seals dried up on me. Now I get intermittent smoke and oil loss.
If you have everything you need up front, you will be a happier camper. However, you want to do what ever will get your baby running again the fastest.
NOTE - if you get a 95 block, the main bearings are a little different. Be prepared to get a second set in that situation.

No upgrades for me, I will be selling it once its fixed. I just wish I could drop the crank and replace the bearings. How hard is that? Do you have to take off the head? 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 10th Anniversary OZ Edition Check Out My Site For Pix http://mywebpages.comcast.net/EclipseRaceR/MyEclipse/VIS%20CF%20Hood/
