I was dumb and lazy and had one of those oil change and free carwash deals catch my eye...and now 35000 mile later I go and change my oil and the nut is so rounded and so tight I can't get it off. Is there anyway less then a new oil pan I can fix this? I thought about a piggy back bolt but I cant get the old one out

2 words my friend: vise grips (aka locking pliers). and pick up a new bolt from satan.

autozone sells the bolt for 1-2dollars

Sears has these slick Craftsmen rounded or stripped bolt removers. I've found them SO useful for a ton of bad bolts. They look like sockets sort of.

You simply stick them on the end of a rounded off bolt and they'll bite into them as you use a wrench of a socket on the end of the remover to pull off the bolt. The bolt will obviously be unusable after this procedure, but after it's rounded off, why would you re-use it?

Sears sells the entire set in two separate $10 packages for a total $20. It's worth it!

You drove "35K" miles B 4 changing your OIL!?!? I think the BoLt "Self Rounded" in discust:P

yeah definitly get those craftsman sockets.....they are worth their weight in gold..... but i agree that a nice locking set of pliers should do the job.... did for me when i had the same problem a few years back thanks to the idiots at lube on the run... i seriously think they use a pnumatic wrench to put that measly bolt back on.

Call Satan about the replacement bolt. I bought one a while back because of the same shit and it was about 30 cents.

You could get the next size smaller socket and bang it on with a hammer then try...

Go to pepboys and they carry a brand call Oil-tite. (I believe). they sale our replacement oil drain plug. I think it is M14X1.50.

Been there, done that....used vice grips and a hammer. I replaced it with one of those drain plug replacement valves that the next time you change your oil you just hook up the hose. It rules!

if you wanna be a cheap ass like me, weld a nut onto the head of the bolt, then use that to get it out. JB weld works to secure the nut to the head too. then take it off as normal. BTW, better use a nut that is similar in size to the head of the bolt.

Getting the plug off is one thing. The next plug you use will get rounded too, because the threads on the pan are crossed. That's why I got another pan. You know what I'll be doing next oil change.

I guess you could re-thread the pan. I've heard you can get something from Pep Boys to replace your plug, sorta like a plug in a plug. This will give you good threads.

Either way, it's still a pain in the ass, especially when someone else does it to your car.
