#55210, "How much will a header help my exhaust tone?"

Right now i have an apexi N1 catback, but its just too loud too me. I was thinking about getting a HP header 4-2-1 too maybe deepin the exhaust tone a bit. Am i expecting anything special out of this? I did want something a little bit louder than stock. But now its just deep and loud....

Thanks

The exhaust will get noticably deeper if you install a header 4/2/1 or 4/1 at idle and during normal driving, not by a lot but you'll notice it. You might feel the car a little slower to take off from a stop but when you get above 3k the car will feel like its pulling a bit more than before. Just stay away from 4/2/1 I used to have one and my car felt like I was driving with the A/C on so I sold it and got a 4/1 and now im happy.

It will deepen the tone, but if anything it could get louder, because it will flow better, but it will flow in even pulses, so the sound just just be better over all, get one. If the exhaust is too loud; weld in a resonator, or a bigger resonator than you have.

I havent had any power loss with the 4-2-1. In fact off the line the car feels much stronger. Made very nice gains in the low RPM ranges really doesnt do anything for highspeed with the 4-2-1.

Hey dude, I have the N1 catback, and I love the tone I have with a Greddy 4-1 header...click on my link at the bottom of my sig...I believe the first 3 sounds are with just the N1, and the last 3 are header, catback, and CAI. Hope this helps.

Edit: My bad, top 3 are with header, bottom 3 are without

Thanks for the replies!

What are the best places to look and decide on a header? 4-2-1 and 4-1 styles.

Thanks

My wife got pissed at the greddy header we put on. Now she thinks the car is too quiet. It realy mellowed the tone of are exhaust. Cant you get a silencer for it? I really like the gain in the upper rpms. try MachV.com or modacar for the greddy header. when we bought ours it was still up there in price but I bet you can get opne cheeper now. Mabey nopi or some thing for a differant one.

Header will typically make the exhaust even louder. and im not trying to step on anyones toes, but i wouldnt shell out 300-400 dollars just to change the sound. id be more worried about the performance increase. headers on the 420A havent really shown much gain as far as Peak HP is concerned, but i would bet they help smooth out the powerband in the upper RPM's, but hurt your low-end.

The header definitely does smooth out the exhaust sound. It also make it a little more quiet and controlled. The problem with the header:

My car couldn't pull a limp dick out of a wet whore now!!

I have basically lost all lower end torque. If you don't launch from 3K, don't bother, you will lose a race. There is very little power before 3k, but the 3k-redline is awesome and sooooo smooth.

I didn't loose any low end with my header. felt good throughout the rpm range. The enhaust will smooth out if the header is a good equal legnth runner design, because the exhaust gas pulses don't run into each other, and they can increase the sound because they flow that much better, it's a toss up. Getthem because they will help with perfomance, remember it's not always about peak HP numbers, you can broaden your torque curve or your hp curve and get more out of it because it will pull harder in the rpms before and after your peak. I wish Sport Compact or whoever did that test, would have published dyno charts and not just header increased peak HP by 1. That says nothing.

Smooth idle? We don't need no stinking smooth idle.
