#55174, "after rebuild - what is normal?"

I've got some downtime before we get the engine rebuilt (again - grr). I thought I might ask what I can expect to see that I shouldn't be too worried about after rebuilding my bottom end with higher CR. I've heard about the freeze plugs leaking some coolant being normal, but should the exhaust smoke a bit? Will the idle change? What sort of things should I expect to see?

Thanks in advance as usual! emoji

Nothing really too excting should go on when you get the motor in. When I got mine done, there was a little bit of smoke at first ONLY. It may smell a bit funny while its burning off the solvents and somne assembly lube etc, but it should go away very shortly. Should not smoke at all after that if it is built properly.

Just a thought...
Before we started pulling the engine yesterday (to redo the damn bedplate seal), we let it idle for a few minutes. I had some minimal bluish/white smoke coming out the tail. The smoke "cloud" was never more than about a foot long, I think I (notice not WE, John...) might have munched the oil rings on piston #1. The oil rings wouldn't lay flat but I installed them anyways. emoji
Is it possible to do a compression test with the engine out? If the oil pan is on and you can turn the crank, can't you check it that way? I'm thinking that if the compression in cylinder 1 differs from that of the other 3, I will definitely need to get some new rings for that piston. Does anyone know what sort of numbers I should see on a brand new 10.5:1 CR motor?

I don't want to have all my friends help me pull and install this thing again, only to find I muched the rings enough to make it smoke like a chimney. TIA!
