#55116, "Auto Tranny Electrical Configuration! (help) Tranny Swap DSMer might want this!"

Hi guys, here is my problem stated before, but now, I did alot of research and here is the updated info about these two Tranny. So please give any input!

**IF possible, please go out to check out your car if you have the same configuration as either of the tranny I have. It will help. Coz I want to konw, if you have my new tranny config--Then do you have 2 ECU put together side-by-side?? And also, if you have my old tranny config, then do you have the SINGLE ECU side by side? Thanks guys. Please give me hope and info!**

The Above is the Old Tranny out of a Mitsubishi Eclipse 1996-Nonturbo. As you can see, this is the original tranny in my car, and this car is based on only one ECU device. And I do'nt konw if the TCM or anything if ever existed in the car, but as you read the below info, you will know what I am saying.

The Above is the Old Tranny out of a Eagle Talon 95/96-Nonturbo.
From my research and info up to now, It seems that this tranny might require an extra ECU called TCM. And it is mounted next to our ECU position. (looks like an extra ECU side by side) So this means, for the ATX tranny socket configuration to looks like the above pic, you will have an extra ECU looks of device next to our ECU. (I think) so please give me more input on this. THanks.

SO right now, I have to konw exactly how each wiring works, so I can determines how they can be reconnected and works in my car for the new tranny. Thanks guys.

BTW, the new tranny is all hooked and in my car. But I just haven't drive it or try it yet.. coz I do'nt want to fuck up anything until I konw exactly what they are first. Thanks.
Gil

You have a TCU. It's located under your dash. There was a wiring change between 95s and 96+ trannies.

It seems you would just have to splice into your wiring harness and wire the conections up. if not some one say so, so I dont srew this guys trans. Were there any tcm changes or just wiring connectons?

Ok, in 95 2gNTs both the PCM (Powertrain Control Module also known as your ECU) and the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) are both located in the engine bay right next to one another. In 96+ 2gNTs the PCM changed a little bit. It alone is located in the engine bay. The TCU was moved underneath the dashboard inside the cabin of the car.

As for the sensor differences between the 2 transmissions you are going to have to figure out which wires go to which sensor then cut and create a new harness for it. That is my best guess. I cannot say whether that will work for certain though.

Ok, I am getting the owner for this Tranny to send me the ECU and the TCU.
As I remember, his Talon has an ECU in the engine bay with another metal thing (like an ECU) that mount side by side next to the ECU. So you saying that is the TCU for a 1995 model?

And since the Eclipse I am working on is a 1996, so it's TCU is mounted below the cabin?

If so, when I get the ECU and the TCU, can I just take off the current TCU below my cabin, and hook up the recieved TCU next to the ECU and everything will be set?

Thanks guys.

Ok guys.
I kinda confirmed about this info already. (90% sure)

For 1995 Eclipse/Talon: TCU and ECU are both mounted side by side with each other inside the engine bay.

For 1996 and up Eclipse/Talon: TCU is mounted inside the car under the cabin behind the firewall. While the ECU is mounted in the Engine Bay.

Now, My question is: I think the 1995 ECU is totally different from 96+ and so on... so Can I do the following 2 solution? Tell me which one you think will work or other solution is better.

1) Keep my current ECU, but swap out the current 96+ TCU and put in the 95 TCU (with all wire harness and etc)

2) Replace both my current ECU and TCU (96+) and put both the 95 ECU and 95 TCU into my car (with all 95 wire harness and etc)

Which is will it works?
Is there any better solution for this?

***MAIN QUESTION: Can I use a 1995 ECU in a 1996+ Car????

Thanks guys.
This is getting more and more complicated. (Engine Rebuilt, then to Tranny Swap, now to ECU and Electric problems) Damn.... emoji emoji
All help are greatly appreciated.

Don't try either of the things you just suggested. For one thing the 95 ECU won't work in your car. 2nd your TCU is fine you just don't have the wire connectors needed for the trans you bought. Figure out what wires need to go to those sensors cut them out of the harness what was originally used, make a connector of some sort to hook them up. That is your best bet. I can't say for certain that it will work but the other choices would just give you more trouble than you're looking for.

Hi, but what trouble are you talking about? if I changed the ECU?

I got the 1995 ECU, TCU and all wires.
So All I can do now, is COMPLETELY change the ECU, TCU and all the wires... I just have to konw if it will work or not. Will it?

I do'nt mind about going through all the problem about changing wires and so on...as long as they works.

I just wnat ot konw, Will a 1996 Car/Engine with a 95 Tranny works fine with a 1995 ECU and TCU? I thoguth all 95-99 Engine are the same, so shouldn't they work?

Thansk again.

The engines are the same, but the electrical configurations and harness connectors changed throughtout the 2G production run. So, no, it won't work because most of the plugs will be different between the 96 electricals and the 95 harness.

What Thura is saying is that you don't need to change the TCU at all. You're just making this more complicated than it should be. If anything, i'd be looking at taking the sensors off the dead trans and putting them on the good one, so that yu don't have to find/make harness ends for your wiring harness to plug in.

That's why i told you to look for a trans with the same harness conenctors on it. Saves time and headache when the crunch comes.

Sup guys.
I tried today to take out the TCU from under the dash today and try to seperate it's wires from all others... and I just thinking... IT"S IMPOSSIBLE.... it's like a WEB...or a NEST... it's CRAZY.

Now I feel very bad. If I can't change the TCU and the ECU, how can I get the Tranny working?

Please help me.
If anyone here happens to have the wiring diagram or circuitry or anything like that that tells which pin and which wire to do what... then it will be GREATLY helpful!

Again, Thanks in advance! and greatly appreciated!

Dude, you've been told how to do it. I'll try and spell it out for you a bit more.

Leave your TCU alone.

First you should figure out what plugs are similar between the 2 transmissions. On that picture there are 2 that are similar - the solenoid and the speed sensor. Do the plugs on your wiring harness plug right into these sensors? If they do - thats cool. If they don't - get the tranny side plug from the 95 model - cut your existing plug off - and splice the appropriate wires into the old style plug so that it works.

Whats with the output speed sensor on your old tranny. It looks like its bashed in or something. Does the harness plug for the ouput speed sensor plug right into the new tranny. If it does thats cool. If it doesn't - get the tranny side plug from the 95 model - cut your existing plug off - and splice the appropriate wires into the old style plug so that it works.

It looks like the park/neutral position sensor is in a different place on the new tranny. Does the harness plug for the park/neutral position sensor reach to the new location? If it doesn't you'll have to extend the wires to make it reach. Does the harness plug for the park/neutral position sensor plug right into the new tranny. If it does thats cool. If it doesn't - get the tranny side plug from the 95 model - cut your existing plug off - and splice the appropriate wires into the old style plug so that it works.

The transmission range sensor and oil temperature sensor connection was all one thing on your old tranny. It looks like they either didn't use an oil temperature sensor on the old one - or the sensor is just in a different place. If they didn't use one, then I'm not sure what to tell you except - forget about it for now. if they do use one - get the tranny side plug from the 95 model - cut your existing plug off - and splice the appropriate wires into the old style plug so that it works. And for the transmission range sensor - get the tranny side plug from the 95 model - cut your existing plug off - and splice the appropriate wires into the old style plug so that it works.

I have no idea what color wires go to where on this transmission - but that is the easiest way to approach it. In a nutshell - get all of the tranny side plugs from the 95 model that you need, and wire them into your existing harness, extending the harness if the plugs are in a different location.

I hope that helps.

i posted this as the first reply, but it magically disappeared...

you might be able to buy the sensor harness' from satan, or find the harnesses on a junker and take them, then just splice your current configuration into them...

Sup guys.
Ok, This is the newest update after I spent 6 hours reading every single word in the manual on Auto Tranny..
This is what I came up now.

I will use the term "95 tranny" stand for the new tranny I just put in and "96 tranny", my old tranny that I fucked up.
95 Tranny: has 2 plugs-Park/Neutral & Range Sensor
96 Tranny: has 1 plug-Range Sensor & Oil Temp (built in)

Ok now, I read the manual and as it said, the Range sensor in 96 Tranny is 4 cables, combination of both Park/Neutral and Range Sensor in 95 (90% sure)

And for the oil temperature, up to now, I don't think the 95 Tranny has that. So I will just leave that.
And about the adapters and so on, I got all of them for 1995. So that won't be the problem. The ONLY PROBLEM I have now is, I CAN"T FIND any info on my manual (both of them-Download & Cliton) Show the wiring hazness of them.

SO PLEASE GUYS, if you guys have those info, please scan them or upload them for me.
ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
and in advance, THANKS!
Gilbert:thumbsup

Damn I totally agree w/ extremRS get the right one. There is no way in hell I would try to wire up a trans on guess work. If your gurl is gunna drive that car that car I wouldnt risk it. My wife would kick my ass back to Germany If I messed up our 2g mack that KILL me. Save your self time and money and get the right one. It may sound like a hassle now but to rewire a 95 and hope it works now that would be a hassle if it didn't.

Thanks again in advance!
