#54213, "ATX - Won't engage gear after Engine rebuilt!!! HELP!"

Sup guys, After one whole nite and day, I calmed myself down now, and so, let me repost this message here and hope that my calm down attitude will get all of ya DSMer to help me out here.
You guys been the best to me since I started rebuilding, but now, I just feel bad coz the engine is DONE and perfect, but I CAN"T move the car.. Here is the situation again emoji

------------------------------------------------------------------
A breif explanation on my car's rebuilt history first:
I got the car, and I spun her bearing, so much that the piston hits the head, and fucked up the whole crank.
I took the everything off, but leave the tranny in the car (only the engine out) And at first, I don't konw there were 4 bolts that connect to from the flexplate(engine side) to the Torque Converter (Tranny side) So I think I BENTED it (that's my problem I think)....
Anyway, after 4 hours of struggle, I got it figure it out, gave it to a shop for New ring, new bearing (all bearing, main, rod) and hone, clean, cut the whole crank, etc...
I put everything back, and the first 4 times I put the engine back, I CAN"T turn the crank after the flexplate(the big gear) is bolt to the Torque Converter. My 4th or 5th time of reputting the engine back into the car, it turns, so I was like.... THANK GOD....
After everything is in, and hook EVERYTHING back, I start the engine... ALL GOOD, sound good and everything, BUT I hear trick, trick, trick, NOT from the engine, but from the tranny....But anyway, I keep it run at 1500RPM for first break in. Then I cool it down and go for a test drive....

The sad story begins... no matter what gear I put the car into, the car WON"T MOVE, it's like the engine doesn't hold to the tranny. I made sure the cable is connected, when it shift, the cable to pull. Also when I shift to every gear, like 'park', the car won't move, and so on...so the tranny to the wheel is FINE.
Also, after a while of break in, the tranny has ALOT of smoke comes out, from the dip stick of the tranny and etc....
---------------------------------------------------------------

**NOTE**
1) I never pull out the TC, but I keep turning it and for my 4th time putting the engine back into the tranny... I can turn the crank after I bolt up the flexplate and the TC....so I guess it works.
Also, then I fill up the Tranny fluid to MAX... to where it said should be when HOT
2) I already have all the Manual that are available.
**NOTE**

**PROBLEM (symptoms)**
1) Tranny has tricking sound (ever since first engine start till NOW)
2) Engine runs like champs, but car WON"T move in any gear
3) Smoke comes out from tranny's dip stick & bellhousing area for the first 5 minutes engine start, but after it has no more smoke...

(I think I sprayed alot of WD-40 and water when I put everything back... but the wierd thing is, smoke come out from dip stick of the tranny... HELP)

So any input???
Is it something EASY??? or did I fucked up the tranny from benting the TC when pulling out the engine??

Ok guys, now everything is organized and clearly stated. So please, what you guys think?

Thanks man.
If you guys can help me through this, and my car and run again, I will be steptical... emoji

Sorry, just want to reorganize everything to limit some confusion..sorry.

OK guys.. I talked to an mechanic today, (just on the phone) he never see my car or anything, but I told him my situation.

I told him about I forgot the 4 bolts from flexplate to the TC, and how I might had bent the TC.
He said, if I did put stress on the TC too much when I put out the engine, which I blieeve I bented it.
He said, when I bent the TC, it prolly damaged some bearing that holds the input shaft, and also, damaged the Oil Pump in teh Tranny.

So When I start the car, first, the input shaft is bent (or the TC is bent) , second, the bearing is damaged, Third, NO oil will get pumped to everywhere in teh Tranny, so over heat, and the Tranny start to give out smoke,... and also all the TRICKING sound from bad bearing and so on....

ANyway, he said most likely, most of the bearing is fucked, oil pump is fucked, so I most likely require a FULL rebuild.

Just to remember, I am not asking him to fix my car, so he has no need to tell me how BAD it is, Coz he is selling a used ATX tranny.

SO now, I am thinking about buying a used tranny. But I am afraid now. Can I put it in myself?
Whta do I have to do?

Thanks guys.
Gil

What he is saying sounds totally possible. I do remember saying the same thing, in one of your other threads, about putting too much pressure on the TC when you forgot the 4 bolts..Looks like you may have to yank out the trans. Its not that hard to do, so dont get too worked up emoji I'm sure you can find LOTS of used auto trannies out at junk yards.. I wouldnt pay to rebuild it, thats just way too much. Find a doner trans, preferable with lower miles.

Thanks man...
Thanks for all of ya support.
I DEFINITELY decided two choice.
1) Part out the whole car and sell them
2) Fix the tranny (means more $$)

Anyway, can I ask you all ATX or MTX people a question.
HOW DURABLE is an ATX tranny is in Mitsubishi Eclipse?
Do they last LONG? good quality?
The only think I worry now is when I get a used Tranny, HOW CAN I TELL if it is A GOOD TRANNY????

Please tell me some tips on getting a used ATX tranny guys.
THANKS.
GIlbert:thumbsup

hey man -- if you pulled an entire engine out rebuilt it -- you can most certainly figure out how to swap a tranny -- you will be fine -- good luck man.
