#54151, "Why does my car sound like a v8?"

Okay for a while now, whenever I go above 70-80% throttle, my car starts to make this wierd noise. If you ever heard a TransAm or a Camaro drive by with that hollow burbling sound, thats exactly what my car sounds like. Its not super loud, but enough to hear from inside the car. I dont think its the exhaust, because it just started doing it and the exhaust has been on the car for over a year. Im gonna see if I can make a recording of it.

I am starting to get worried. Is that what knock sounds like? I think Im burning oil (car is wierd, sometimes Ill lose a lot of oil, sometimes I wont lose any), could that be responsible for the noise? Does anyone have the same problem? Ive tried using 87 and 93 octane, happens on both. I mean it sounds awesome, but its not supposed to be there so its freaking me out. Thanks for any help.

Could be an exhaust leak, metal rusts, do a visual inspection of your exhaust. Listen to it running and see if you can hear where it's coming from.

So you were 16 when you started working on your DSM. That's cool, i can't even drive yet(15 years), but i've already started work on my dsm. So far i've replaced the HG and put on an intake. It helps that my dad is a chrysler certified mechanic, and my grandpa is a dodge, chrysler, jeep dealer. I got my 97 Esi about 9 months ago at a dealer auction for $4,000 now i only owe $990. I'm not a spoiled little rich kid or anything, and i don't really want to be. I take pride in knowing i've worked for everything i have. I think it's great that i'm not the only one who started young. Oh yeah and most of the work has been done by myself, my dad is one of those people that tells you what to do and lets you figure out the right way to do it by yourself.

Bigup to the underage massive! emoji

I know exactly what your talking about. It sounds like a hungry jabba the hut screaming out your tailpipe. Thats called detonation and is almost as scary as jabba the hut. :o

EDIT:

if your running the cartech FPR thats probably the reason why. Thats how i poped my 1st motor. the cartech will not hold its settings.

if your not turbo check your fuel pump and fuel filter.

Goddamit I knew it. Im going to turbo soon so ill be replacing everything, as well as putting in larger injectors (using SFMU)... Hopefully that will solve the problem. My car has been running awful lean too. Should I try to even it out with the AFC (ive been scared because of the timing issues with it).

Like etx said check the fuel filter and pump. If you have high milage car I would most def change the filter. and if it is detination which it sounds like run high test and drive like a good boy. stay off the red line and wash behind your ear emoji

I think if your getting detonation on an NA motor you got big problems. Check your fuel system, change your plugs and wires. If that dosent help get cho' arse a compression and leak down test.

My car makes the same badass sound, All I have is the intake at the moment, but at 4K RPM's through about 5 it sounds like a small block chevy from the inside, from 5.5 to redline it makes an aired out screaming sound, not the cool growling roar sound. Is that aired out scream at high RPMs normal for our cars?

My insurance payment is WHAT now?!?

Awesome. We have alot in common. I've owned my car since last August and I turned legal in December. I had installed all my mods(minus the MP TB) by myself(with a little guidance, inch lbs to ft lbs almost got me...lol) before my birthday. I wish I woudlve got my car for 4k. I payed 8250 out the door. Pisses me off to see the same car (mileage/model) sell for 2-3k less since the economy is blowing right now. In 2 summers I mowed atleast 200 yards at ~$45 to pay for mine. I wanted a nice car so I got what I payed for. Now that I think about it, I shouldve bought a high mileage and rebuilt + turbo. Oh well, we all love our DSM's. Funny how hindsight is 20/20.
