#53707, "comments about the proposed INDY intake manifold"

There has been interesting talk going on around here regarding the gains of this manifold on the neon, and what it may do for us.

I agree with many of the comments that we shouldn't see a gain of 25-45 like the neon boys, as there OEM intake manifold is a disgrace to begin with. however....

Look at it like this. Forget everything else that's different about the neon and eclipse intake and exhaust layouts. Basically, they are both 420a engines with different manifolds. With all else being equal, if you take out an eclipse engine and a neon engine - and bolt the same exhaust/intake equipment to it - you should get the same hp/torque figs. If a neon 420a can make 180 hp with the mods they listed (please correct this hp number, as I cannot find the dyno of the INDY manifold anywhere), an eclipse 420a should be able to make that same power NA.

I'm saying forget the relative increase of our hp and torque over stock (as we begin the day with an advantage over the neons.) Just look at the absolute number of a neon 420a with those mods. Our 420a should have an output very close to the neons at the end of a day. If that's indeed 180hp, that would be very cool for us NT guys ! emoji

And I said with all else being equal. But the differences ARE there - though possibly not very significant. For example: I figure we may have some differences in our cam profiles - as I recall out of the factory the eclipse 420a was modified to give more torque than the neons, as the eclipse weighs more, thus requiring more torque. Also, our exhaust manifolds are different. Though I don't know if the neons or ours are better. (regardless, there are plenty aftermarket headers for us to choose from) Issues like this muck up my theory, but I feel not to the extent that would warrant throwing it out.

ok should we see good gains, yes i think we should, should we see 25hp NO, But are intake manifolds do need some help, have you ever seen those things on the inside, with all my knoweldge of cars and shit i would say we would see a gain of 10hp maybe more maybe less. i still plan on buying one when they come out. as long as they make some HP. But just think of that 10hp plus the 60mm TB and a Good Intake. Are head will get all the air it needs

here is a pic i got off the neon board. that dyno from howell looked incredable but for the real power gains you guys should go to www.neons.org and do a search with indy in to see what everyones says.i want this thing really badly to come out for our car, but some good answers can be seen at the neon site. some things that seem to be commen with the neon guys for this manifold.

1 - it is a pita to install
2 - 25whp is probably stretching it, most people say it feels like at least 10whp
3 - car runs smoother, sounds better, feels like more power low and hi

these 3 i guess would make up 80% of what the indy owners say. i have read 2 posts where 1/4 mile times went down after the indy, another claiming a dyno had lost power, which both of these should be looked into further.... i see there is alot of anticipation for this product here, but if they are not seeing 25whp and only 10... then maybe its a stretch to think that we will at least see 10whp. i would love to see a dyno from a non seller of this product.

wow. i see why metaljim said that the OEM Neon manifold is "a disgrace to engineering". the indy one looks like it flows thousands of times smoother! i'd imagine that 15 WHP for N/A and maybe as much as 25-30 WHP for the boosted folks are pretty reasonable numbers.

If Im not mistaken dont the neons have a more agressive intake cam than we do? This also could make a difference in how much power we will see compared to their gains. With that said we have to remember just how much of a difference everything we have done to the intake in theses cars has done for us. We have seen nice gains from intake and from throttle body upgrades thus I would think we will see nice gains as well but it will be hard to compare with the neons. One of those things where I think well just have to wait and see. I personally think well probably see between 10-15 HP gains from the manifold based on the gains we have had from other mods.

25+hp on a high boost turbo car is very likely. I have PureRage's old intake and the thing fucking rocks. All n all its a 4" tubular plenum and is about right on top of the lower runners eliminating the upper runners and takes up to a 75mm Mustang TB. I am running a Gude TB on it now because I still need to work out the wiring for the mustang TB.

The car hits full boost at ~3500 rpm and the top end is absolutely ridiculous.

I don’t know if NA apps would be quite as impressive but you definitely need a better intake manifold when boosting on our cars to enjoy the full benefits of the turbo.
