#53612, "HELP: 2.4 swap is done but we have no spark!!!"

Here's the deal the 2.4 is ready to go but we tried firing it up today and nothing. There is no spark, we tested the coil and it is good but when we test the connector there is no power. On the center wire of the coil harness whick should show 12v (as far as I know) shows nothing except when the key is first turned to the on position. When the key is turned to on there is voltage there for a second then its gone and there is nothing there when we crank it. We tested continuity fom the harness plug through to the ecu plug and it is good and the coil is good what else could it be. Any help would be great

Funny that you should mention this. I had the same problem. Did you advance the cam magnet 90 degrees? You are getting the initial voltage to the coil, and I bet that if you were to take all 4 plugs out and put them on the intake mani (plugged in) you would get 1 spark in one plug. Make sure that you are withing a tooth or 3 of 90 degrees advanced on the cam magnet.

yes coil harness is re wired and cam magnet is turned. We tried jumping the coil directly from the battery and still got nothing. The coil tested OK and the relays are fine, lots of fuel but still no spark. We also rechecked the cam magnet and it looks to be good. Anyother ideas?

If the cam and crank sensors are no in synch, then you will have the problems that you describe. I can guarantee that it is not the ASD relay, it is not a lack of continuity to the coils, it is not that my half sister-in-law's dog's breeder's neighbor has put a spell on it (well, she might have), or anything else. Getting that magnet exactly 90 degrees counterclockwise (looking at it from the tranny side of the motor) is the problem. Take it from me, that kept me frustrated for a long time, until I finally spoke to Azizi Tucker of TTI, and he told me.
Trust me.

We checked the cam magnet and it looked to be 90 degrees, but then again we just eyeballed it. How exactly did you set it?

the easiest way is to put a mark with ink on it before removing the magnet and cutting the nipple

you measure the outside of the cam in millimiter and divide by 4
from your mark you turn until you reach the above value

Hey Bill did you ever look into using the cam magnet from the 2.4L cams? Perhaps that would make the swap easier and and the indexing would be right.

the problem would still be there
actually the cam position sensor is not the problem itself but the solution
the real problem is the crank position sensor of the 2.4
the 2.4 is using a different piston for its timming
we can't play with the crank position system since those are made with big notches on the crankshaft itself
so what we do is playing with the cam magnet to change the reference point, with the coil wires to change the fire sequence and with the injector harness to change the shooting order

with all those changes the ECU thinks that all the system is working in reference of cylinder 1 while the real reference is now cylinder 3

I am having the same problem with my 2.2L stroker. Coil tested good new wires new plugs car cranks over, and fuel pump primes. NO spark tho. If it is the ASD relay, do I have to mess with the magnet also?. Or is that just for the 2.4L? I have never done this. Hell I dont even know where its at at this point in time. PLEASE help, the car is supposed to go to the dyno on Thursday.

The cam magnet mod is only for the 2.4L. Not necessary for the 2.2L because it uses your standard 2.0L block.

the1bill had a hell ofa time with his cam magnet being off a little bit and the car wouldn't start...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

still no luck with the cam sensor. we spun the damn thing around for hours and nothing. the sensor is good (we tested it on my car) so we are gonna try a new magnet and see what happens.
