#5344, "I'm helpless i need help"

Hi guys,
I read the posts everyday and try to understand what's going on under the hoods of our cars. but maybe my female brain just can't grasp it all. I'm getting the head replaced, as you all know our cars are ridiculously slow until you hit a certain RPM. While i have the damn engine apart what can i add to make the low end a little more peppier without breaking the bank? i would like something durable as my car has 90K on it. I just read a post from someone that wants to upgrade then go turbo and in the middle of it all i got lost. what are pulleys? what do they do? If noone has the patience to answer me can you direct to a link that could explain it to me? I have no idea what cams or cam gears are.. i understand rockers but anything lower than that and i'm lost. :'(

Picture to come soon...

Well i'll be damned. I didn't know you were a girl.

Pulleys are fairly simple: They work on the principle that less weight is easier to turn, and that a smaller gear attached to a larger one will turn the larger at a slower speed. With an underdrive pulley, the pully is much lighter and a percentage smaller than stock, which basically "frees" horsepower that otherwise would be lost to having to turn X amount of weight at X RPM (parasitic drag) The percentage mentioned above is the percent underdriven, which for the AFX udp is 30%. This means that the pulley has a circumference that is 30% smaller than stock. This causes it to rotate 30% slower than stock, in effect turning everything attached to it (A/C compressor, power steering pump, alternator) 30% slower. This reduces parasitic drag, and allows more power to be applied to the driveline since it no longer has to be used to turn the accessories.

Howell Automotive has them for $161 .. dyno'd results of 11-15HP gain.

NO ONE IS HELPLESS, who knows how to ask questions and absorb the information given. Your best bet is to get the Service Manual for your car and sit down and READ IT. Not like a novel but page thru it and look at different things that you have questioned in your mind. THEN, When you need info, you have it at your finger tips.
GOOD LUCK

only thing u need to change is the belts, they will need to be smaller...AFX pulley comes with the belts i believe, the other ones don't.

nothing else is necessary but its a good idea to change the timing belt, waterpump and possibly add cams and cam gears to save on future labor costs. I think you can tune cams to give you more bottome end, not sure and an apex s-afc may help. don't get a bigger exhaust, just the muffler, if you get headers, go with 4-2-1 design
