Whatever happened to getting that Indy manifold made for the 420A?? Didn't someone take in their car for them to fit it on? I was interested and on the list to buy one and am eager to find out if its still on or not.

I don't know any thing about it but I'f there is a manifold out there thats not a "drag" manifold I'll get one. Is it a street manie or race? I'll try a search to try and find more info.

This has been a pretty big deal around here lately. I know it gives great gains for the Neon crowd, but how do you guys "in the know" think it would stack up to a port/gasket matched OEM that's been Extrude Honed? I'm curious.

Not trying to jack the thread. Just curious!

the gains of the honed extrude over the ported: entire inside of manifold is covered where a ported one only can go so far in the runners, also honed extude supposedly has perfect even air flow going into each runner.the gains of indy over honed extrude: the insides just look perfect, so round and smooth everywhere. nobody knows the exactly wat the gains will be, but the more stuff i read from the neon boards the happier they seem with it.

I don't know if I'm "in the know", but honestly I can't see that we would see as much of a gain as the Neons get with their Indy manifolds. The reason is that, for the Neons, the new manifold is completely redesigned. Have you ever seen what the stock Neon intake manifold looks like? It's an embarassment to engineering in general.

Here's some pictures of a stock Neon manifold that's been extrude honed, but it shows how bad the original design is - http://www.modernperformance.com/dcx/exhonene.shtml

Here's some pictures of the new Neon Indy manifold - http://www.modernperformance.com/dcx/indy_intake_manifold.shtml

The new manifold centers the ports in the plenum, makes them round and venturied, and has an nicely angled intake track from the TB.

The stocker has sharp square intake ports that are offset to one side in the plenum, the intake track from the TB is flat, and take a close look at how far into the plenum the runners are located. They start like half way into the plenum, at the top of the lower piece. "Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking. We're experiencing a little turbulence right now. Nothing to be worried about, it shoule pass when we redesign the intake manifold". What a piece of shit.

Our manifolds on the other hand aren't AS bad from the factory. Although they desparately need port matching, the intake track to the plenum is ok - straight in. Our runners have square ports and could benifit from the venturi type that the Neon Indy manifold uses. At least they start on the side of the plenum and not in the middle. I just don't think it can be improved as drastically as the stock Neon POS.

Will we see gains with an Indy manifold? They wont make them unless they can show gains.

Will we see as much of a gain as the Neons? I seriously doubt it.

How much gain will we see with the new Indy manifold? I think that they could get a few(2-5) more HP then a stocker that's been port matched & polished - on a stock engine...but we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Thanks for the info Jim. I think for now I will just port/gasket match my stocker and get a spare mani ready for extrude honing. That indy sounds pretty sweet, but it sounds like for the money and time spent waiting on something that *might* be made, 2-5 hp ain't that much. Now if you'd get another 30hp, then I'd jump right up on the bandwagon on this one.

Thanks anyway! emoji

Where did you come up with 2-5HP?? Thats a total random number. We wont know how much of an increase there will be without Indy dynoing a car with and without the manifold. It could be that low or it could be higher, but I don't think just randomly guessing is helping. I am still eager to see what they can come up with.

Don't get me wrong, I'm eager to see it as well. The 2-5 hp over a ported manifold on an otherwise stock engine comment is STRICTLY personal opinion...and if you notice i also said we'll just have to wait and see.

No, it's not a random number. I'll call it my educated guess and you can decide whether it's a good or bad guess for yourself - either way. I don't know if you could tell from my response to DR1665 but I had the same question when I first heard about this manifold. I looked into it and have given the matter some thought. I just don't see getting 30 hp gain with a different casting - ours isn't all that bad.

partialy agreed with metal jim.

I've done some research of my own on intake mani's and what makes a better/bad manifold.

There are a few tricks that engineers can use to make it more efficiant than stocker. But I doubt that it will give 30hp gain over the stock manifold.

The big key to a good intake manifold is velocity, No matter how big of a port/runner you have if there is no velocity to the air that's going into the combustion chamber, it won't give much power.

One way that the indy manifold is superior is the upper plenum. The tappered form helps with the air velocity. while reducing the over all plenum size will hurt forced induction cars. That's why most of the forced induction cars uses manifold with bigger plenum.

Runner size and tappered runners also help, but it always has to be a compromise for a certain targeted rpms.

another trick is, I forgot the name of this method but.. here it goes. When one cylinder sucks air in and closes the the intake valve, the trapped air outside the valves moves through the intake runner back up to the plenum, but the high pressure of plenum sends that air back down towards the intake valves. The air moves through the intake runner a few times until the intake valves opens again and sucks more air in. Now if the engineers time and design the runners right, they could actually make it so that the intake valves would open while the air is comming back towards the intake valves. That would give the air more velocity and that perticular cylinder would end up sucking more air in the same amount of time.

But even that method could only be targeted for a very small amount of rpm range.

Also, the less amount of bends, twists and sharp turns in the manifold the easier it is for the air to travel to the head. In the end giving a better hp numbers.

Ok I'm tired and I'll stop. Hope i made some sense, if not then disregard the post.

I'm not saying that its a waste of time or money. I'm just like everyone can't wait to see one of these manifold. But some knowledge do raise a few questions and theories.

Great topic.
So looks like they are designing the manifolds for just the MTX.

If the test car is a MTX then the RPMs the manifold is designed for will be slightly higher than for us ATX guys.

Maybe boost would help us out emoji

The manifold shouldnt be specific to the MTX just becuase they are using an MTX to test it. They are trying to get gains across the board not just at 6500 to 7200 RPMs. We should all see very nice gains with this manifold.
