#52731, "Secondary Air Solenoid and spark plug wire problems."
I have a 95' Talon esi.
When I check the error codes using the key switch method I get
code 36. I believe I need to change the secondary air
solenoid. I thought it was a a $30 item but the dealership
wanted well over $100 for it (170 or so...I could be wrong).
I can't seem to find one anywhere and I do not know of anyone
here with a similar DSM so that I can temporary swap. My
question is.....is there a way to defeat the ecm code for this
sensor/solenoid. I tried a jumper wire but that did not help.
Any info?
I also have another problem....
I had bad hesatation and I changed the plug wires. Great....
that worked for a month or two until the problem comes back.
I tried three different brands of wires. I am using Bosch
from Autozone now (lifetime warr.. I swap for free every two
months or so). Every time that I change my wires the car runs
great. I red an article saying that moisture and oil in the
spark plug well will cause this. I changed my valve cover
gasket (complet set), and I keep the wells clean. Could there
be something else causing this problem? I was going to change
out my coil pack but I wanted to wait to see if anyone knew
how to test it first. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

That whole secondary air injection system was obsoleted. Not
sure if it's a recall or a service buliten or what, but the
dealer can remove the solenoid and reflash your ECU to disable
it.

That recall is for the Eclipse. They will not do that free
for the Talon. And thay want too much to do it.

really? i don't have it on my car, 95 Talon, i don't think my
dad payed for it to be removed either. the car used to be
his.
i've changed my plugs, stutter went away, then came back about
a week later, so i bought the MSD Blaster ignition coil and a
set of 8.5 mm Magnecors and put them on. it's been a week and
so far so good. if it comes back i'm gonna try blocking off
that hose like Wtngclan mentioned.

I checked when I lived in New Orleans, La but now I live in
Baton Rouge, LA. I will re-try at these dealerships.
So you changed you coil eh? Do you mind if I e-mail you in a
few months to see if that held up?

anyone know how to just get the code to stop popping up? the
previous owner had the system removed (i can still see the old
wiring harnesses hangin there) but whichever dealer did it
didn't flash the ECU properly b/c i'm still pulling a code 36.
that's the only one keeping my CEL on too. the great thing
is the last owner just took out the bulb so it wouldn't come
on
satan's being a bitch about it too. they wanna charged me a
$100 diagnostic fee even though i've told them exactly what's
wrong. fuck you satan!
haha anyways, if anyone has any info on what that sensor needs
to read so it doesn't trip the CEL... maybe we could do
something similar to the 02 sensor mod? is there just that
one plug or was there more than one hooked up to the system?

I looked up more info from a service manual.
General information.... It operates for a short peroid after
cold engine start-up until the engine coolant temp reaches
approx. 52 deg C (125 degree F).
Operation.... The PCM controlls the ground path for the
solenoid. When the PCM grounds the solenoid,..lets fresh air
to the cat converter.
Item # 5 in book.... Measure the resistance between the
terminals of the solenoid.
Sandard Value: 33 - 39 (looks like the upside down U greek
symbol -- I can't think of the name now. might be ohms) [at 20
degrees C (68 degrees F)].
I noticed that it seems that the connecor has two pins. One
is positive charged the other was a ground. I do not remember
if the engine was cold or hot when i did this (months
earlier). I will put two test light on the pins in the
morning and then run the car for about 1/2 hour or so to see
is the PCM changes anything.
This is where i am at. I tried a jumper wire before. Someone
suggested going to radio shack and jumping the pins using a
22-29 resistor (99 cents). I may even try a relay setup (I
may need a test light or something to consume the power flow).
Last idea that I have is to try to find a 12v solenoid with
the proper resistance.
Can anyone come up with some viable ideas? And yes I know that
I can buy the expensive solenoid from a chrysler dealership
and fix this error code, but that is not the point.
