#52281, "what did i do to deserve this, please help"

i am know on my second weekend of fixing my car. I replaced the oil pump, oil pan gasket, put on adjustable cam gears, new timing belt and valve cover gasket. Here is my problem:

After putting on the timing gears and belt, i lined the up perfect. I had just finished hooking up everything on the valve cover (plug wires, coil, battery and every other electrical and hose things). I have not put on my new under drive pully or hoocked up everything relating to the belts. I got in my car and tried to start it up to see if i had the timing right. I did not get any fire at all. I thought maybe i had the crank miss aligned with the cams. it takes 2 revolutions with the crank to one turn of the cams. So i rotated the crank a full 360 degrees and realigned. This time not start again. I am getting spark from the plugs when i pull them up, ground them and turn the engine. I don't have an error code except for 12 (battery disconneted in last 50 starts). I checked the voltage on the coil at 200 ohm setting, 001 for the primary and 11.44 for the secondary. The battery was a little low so it's sitting on the charger now. also when you pull the sprk plug you can smell gas, when i put a screw driver with a wad of cloth on the end and smell it. It does not really smell like gas, but it is damp with a little old oil residue. All my head bolts are torqued correctly. something is fucked up, did a blow a sensor, is my coil fried or am i just fucked. Is my crank timing off from the cams, if so how can i tell? If anyone has any ideas please help. did i miss something on the installation maybe?

Check the cam angle sensor. This does the lion's share of injector timing. Pull the sensor off of the head, and clean the sensor and the magnet. If that doesn't work, clean the contacts. If that doesn't work, clean the contacts on the Crankshaft Position Sensor. If that doesn't work, try a known-good set of cam and crank sensors (have any 2GNT friends nearby?).

after sleeping on it saterday night, i got up early and started looking at the engine. I cleaned and tested all the sensors again. All looked good so i went to the next step. I removed the valve cover, timing belt and cam gears. I got the idea of comparing the timing marks from the old cam gears compared to the new ones. lined them up and made my own marks that match the old cams. I reinstall the cams and belt using the new marks. After i get everything lined up i rotate the crank a couple times to make sure it all lines up. The new marks are perfect and see that the marks on the new cams end up being 1 1/2 teeth off. I put the valve cover back on and crank her over. It starts right up, no problem. Her is my suggestion to anyone working on your head. If the car ran before you tore it apart, something is more likely out of alignment than electronic. If the gears are not lined up it will not spark. If you are putting on new cam gears, match them up with the old gears and transfer timing marks. Even if the don't match what came with the new cam gears, thne marks were good enough to run before.

What brand cam gears are you using? AEM? I'm almost positive that this is a known issue with AEM gears. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong - and in the same respect if someone could just akknowledge me if I'm correct.

Yeah the AEM Gears (at least the old ones) are off. About 1/2 tooth from the existing timing mark.

i put on findoza gears (i think thats how you spell it) from ptuning.com I would suggest anyone doing this mod to compare the new gears to their stock gears. If they don't line up, make a new mark and use that mark for the timing. I used a small hand hack saw to make the cut/mark. it was enough see the mark with out making any damage. now i'm off to my next project on the car, the intake manifold.
