I was wondering if it was possible to do a complete engine rebuild at home. Meaning no machining or any other shop work of that sort.

i would imagine that it is POSSIBLE, but it would only be a positive experience if everything were exactly to spec. the problem is that you dont know that, thats why you have to take the block to a machine shop to measure tolerences and stuff. the cylinder walls need to be at least honed, and possibly bored if they arent perfectly straight. i would thing you would need to check for warpage as well.

Sure. You must have some really good mic's and a really good piece to start with. Make your work place spotless. Seriously, I mean make it as if you were planning to paint your car there. Breaking a glaze can be done with a simple ball hone, a drill, and a steady hand. Chiltons, I believe, will give you a picture of what good cross-hatching looks like so you know what you're trying to achieve. Amateurs can do this! Read alot before you do it though.

It can be done, but I wouldn't recommend it. At least get the block to a machine shop. Have them clean itup and check for things in spec. You can do all the assembly yourself with the right tools and a set of plasti-gauge. But I would get get the block checked and cleaned before the work. The best thing in buildign a performance motor is getting those tollerances right and close. That you cannot do at home, unless you're house is set up like a machine shop.

Cleaning is actually the only thing I'd recommend having done that you really can't do well. A good set of cylinder mic's and a regular set of micrometer's and that should be all you need. Magnafluxing is just metal grindings and a magnet that spands over about a 5" distance. Most machine shops just do those two things unless you tell them different. Sonic or X-ray methods can only be used on the head since it's obviously aluminum. Again, most machine shops probably won't chuck a bock up into the mill to break a cylinder glaze and regain a cross hatch. Most well maintained motors that I have come across actually still have some of their cross-hatching. IMO cleanliness is the single most important thing in engine building. You have to know why you are rebuilding. Did your motor have a problem or are you just upgrading?

Don't forget checking a head for tue flatness, a very miniscule varaition ca lead to a premature blown head gasket.

Sup guys. I know this is kinda off topic, but since you guys are talking about rebuilding the engine at home. That will be perfect for me to start asking this question.

I will be rebuilding my engine around September. But I do have a question. I want to send my engine to VT Co to do it for me. But I am going to do it at home and I don't have a engine lifter. Is that ok?

I mean... can I still take out the engine without the engine lifter and sent it to the VT Co shop? for a rebuild?
Coz I am thinking about taking the engine apart while in the car...so it will be light and easy to remove?

Give me some insight or any inputs.

Yeah man -- i sincerely doubt you want to pick an engine up with your hands --- or something like a 4x4 and some rope Best bet is to either rent or buy an engine lift.

I noticed your sig says you are willing to learn -- first thing I would learn you on is how to lower a car -- that gap is HUGE muaaahhaha....

if you do the rebuild in the shop u can buy a chain hoist...

rent a cherry picker or buy one off ebay for 100$

ive got a v8 out of a car with 5 guys just latching on to it and sticking a 4x4 under it to pull it out awww those were the old days....

Yeah I know she needs to be lowered. New shocks and springs would help me at the track too... but I've been spending all my money on engine fun!!! Once I do exhaust and maybe redo my fuel system the suspension is coming. Depends on what happens with my new headwork and if the need for the bigger injectros is immediate or not. (since I try not to do stuff half-assed, 310cc injectors, Aeromotive FPR, so basically a new fuel system) I'll just have to see what the demand is. Stock 40k suspension still handles fine, but if there's not enoguh fuel and I'm gonna blow up... I know which comes first.

Man I just found one at kragen for 85 bux, don't know why it was that cheap cuz in their catalog its 150 but it had a 85 dollar sticker on it maybe because it was open box buy c'mon it a cherry picker if I'd seen that I would bought it and loaned it out to people and used it as a clothes rack
