#51171, "Rebuilt Engine or Rebuild the engine...which is better?"
This coming fall i am looking into doing one of these:
1. Either i will buy a rebuilt 420a from the dealership and have it installed.
2. Purchase the kits from howell automotive and have the current engine rebuilt with top and bottom kits.
Which is the better choice? I am not 100% sure what is involved with a rebuild but my goal is to extend the life of the car itself. I am assuming i will acheive this with the howell rebuild kits or am I wrong? Thanks in Advance...........

get the howell kit... you will have a stronger than stock motor- - what would be the point in getting a stock motor put in there??? and a dealer would charge you tons and tons of money btw.
2003 VW GTI 1.8t.. I used to have a 95 Eclipse but well...water sucks.
Well my problem is/was I wasn't sure if the howell rebuild kit was as strong as a totally rebuilt engine. I know it replaces key parts, but it would be no use if it didn't do what i wanted it to do. THe engine in there now has 130K so it is time to either rebuild it or buy a rebuilt one. Nto saying dealer has to install it but they offer a 3 year 36000 miles on all rebuilt engines.
So you are telling me the howell kit and the dealer engine would basically achieve the same thing for me?

As Far as your goals of just getting the car to last longer, the Howell kit would be the way to go. If you plan on going turbo later then it's still the way to go. When you get the rebuild kit, it's just like getting a rebuilt motor, except there is no warranty. But when you rebuild you will do everything they would do at the dealer. All new seals, all new internal parts, the whole nine. So it would be the same end result of having a completely rebuilt motor the parts would just be much better and more durable.
