Jamesman had mentioned in a previous post about drilling a hole in the black cable holder. After drilling, i finally have the butterfly plate horizontal at WOT (Red Arrow). *The large opening to the right was a screw up. Don't do it!

This may not apply to others but I had to move the 'throttle cable adjustment bracket' to the last mount on the manifold. Basically the red circle (first screw mount) was moved to the green circle (second screw mount). So now my adjustment bracket is only held on by one bolt on the manifold. This pulled back alot of loose tension on the cable.

Hope this helps others with the butterfly plate issue.

Clay,

good job minus the screw up... but to be honest i am just disappointed that Modern Performance has not stepped up and maufactured plates to correct this problem. The problem is real -- many are experiencing it... I personally have not... seems to me like the guys who have cruise control are the ones who are seeing issues.. could this be the case??

I agree. I have not yet bought one, but was thinking about it. There were eager to post and answer questions when it came to selling them, but they have now disappeared from the boards entirely. And they have never acknowledged the problem even exists! Bad mojo. I am waiting to buy one until I hear more about the problem and the fix.

I have cruise control and mine opens all the way. The only thing I had a problem with was the return spring didn't have enough tension to close all the way. I credit that to MP's precisionin manufacturing the TB. Everything would work fine while cool, but when driving awhile and the engine getting warm I think the throttle plate may have expanded a little since it's aluminum, and needed more tension on it to close all the way. I still love it! emoji

um the throttle plate is brass, the housing is aluminum, the shaft is steel and the throttle cam is aluminum. From what i remember he Coeffecient of thermal expansion is higher in aluminum than brass, that would mean that the throttle plate would expand less than rest of the TB. when I got my TB it was dragging a little bit when it was going fully closed. i loosened the 2 bolts holding the throttle plate to the shaft and wiggled it a little and it didn't drag after that.

We have been working on a solution for those people having a problem with the plate in our TBs. Our original test car did not have this problem so we need someone in the same area who is having the problem to come by the production facility to work on a solution. Anyone in the SimiValley/Southern California area please contact me so we can get to testing. Many TB's have been sold without any problems, but we are interested in finding the cause and a solution for those having the plate issue.

^ Jamesman redrilled the two holes, on the throttle "cable holder", so that the amount of movement needed to open the throttle plate was reduced. Doing this will mostly likely require you to adjust the throttle cable bracket on the intake manifold. Btw don't drill on the "cable holder" like i did.

Your essentially making new holes which shortens the length of travel the throttle cable needs to open the plate. This in turn, makes the throttle plate more horizontal @ wot. Btw there isn't really a measurement for the drilling, I just eyed it out. Remember what worked for me may not work for you. Good luck

Last week when I was going through the process of removing all my mods in order to pass the california smog check visual inpection, I paid close attention to the MP TB to make sure this time around the re-installation went without a problem, the first time around I had a bad leak and the plate did not open fully.

Well after cleaning the massive amount of silicon I used during the
initial installation, I traced and cut out another gasket using thicker material and THIS TIME I thought i'd leave out the silicon when I re-installed the TB. Also since the Modern Performance TB
was shaped and designed differently, be sure that you mount and align the TB so that its set flat to the manifold. I say this because I noticed a small obstruction on the intake maifiold itself that might create a gap between the flat mounting surfaces of the TB and the maifold, check it out in the pic below:

After installation was complete I turned the engine on and my rpms shot to 1000 and 2 seconds later went down to 780. But my throttle plate still did not open 100%! Ok so now im thinking that the throttle cable needs adjusting, but before I even mess around with that,I though I'd try to figure out another way to fix the situation. So I take a look at my gas pedal and the thick carpet mat (DOH) I take the mat out, step on the pedal and my buddie says "throttle plate is 100% open"
