If I don't know what the compression is supposed to be on my motor, can I still tell by the variation between cilinders that it is blown. I just checked my oil after 300 miles and it was low by 1 and 1/2 qt almost. I do see a little oil in the coolant and I know that's a tell tale sign it's the HG, but before I pull the head I want to make sure.

well have you actually done a compression test yet? If the HG is bad enough to cause oil mixing with coolant, then the faulty cylinder will be quite a bit lower in compression from the rest of the cylinders. How many miles are on the motor? Oil usage on higher miliage engines is normal, i'd say around 1- 1.5 quarts between 3000 mile oil changes. If the HG is blown, most likely the motor will not be running the greatest either. Do a compression test first, then see what you get, then go from there. If you are burning oil out the tailpipe, then you have issues with either oil getting in from the valve guides, worn rings, or the HG leaking. Also, with the motor running, pull the oil dipstick, and see if you can feel any puffs of air coming out. If it is, then you have a good amount blow by occuring.

I have "puff the magic oilpan"---every now and then I burn oil..i know, not the oil pan...but get this...I changed my oil say, 7 months ago..oil pan perfect....changed it 4 months ago..severe dent, and i mean severe...but i'm lazy and it seemed to be working fine, so I left it...changed it about a week ago..the dent is gone!! magic? I'm lost on this one...

It was a false alarm guy's. I just installed this built 2.2L and I got into panic mode. I'm breaking it in (at about 380 right now) and I checked the oil and it was about 1 Qt low ("where did it go?") so I looked into the coolant res. and thought I saw some oil, but it wasn't. When you have a brand new shiney sluged block in there you are a little touchy about things. I didn't realize that a new motor was going to use a little more oil during break in. This is the first new motor I've ever had. I think I was just panicking for nothing.

Yeah new motors like to absorb oil. Just keep an eye and watch for leaks.
And bad compression will now always be the result of a bad HG. Usually but not always, the head gasket can leak between oil and coolant passanges or a fluid passage and the edge, not effecting the cylinders.

yea new motors put oil in all those palces it wasn't when it was cleaned =) can be worry some at times,
remember to keep clean oil in that thing and make sure u have a good catch can pcv valve setup on it...
You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.
If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good. If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast. If you want it good and fast, it's not going to be cheap.
