Considering that i have access to a totalled GSX, how difficult would it be to remove 420a motor and drivetrain and mount up all GSX components into the GS?

me with A-10's Avenger Cannon- can you say depleted uranium rounds?

Do a search. It's much too time consuming and costly to do this. You'd have to swap a lot more than just the engine and drivetrain.

The only way I would do this is if you had the entire complete totalled GS-X. Because you would have to swap everything, all wiring, engine, axles, hubs, suspension parts, interior gauges, computers. And beign that the car is totalled you will still probably have to hunt for a few spare parts. Over all, not worth it in my opinion.

Very difficult & time consuming. Don't listen to all the people telling you "Just buy a GSX." Screw em. If you have the desire, the time, and the means.. then do it.... It'd be sweet.

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.

my thoughts: essentally all the mounting points and MUCH of the underside should be very similar. DSM in Illinois is a company and it makes no sense to differentiate the different models alot, because of the price of tooling etc. So, i figure get a wrecked GSX, remove all the 420a components and replace with all the GSX components. I would have a whole GSX to part out right there, how difficult could that be - they are essentially the same car. Plus lower insurance premiums, and of course the money i would lose selling my car and buying a overpriced GSX for like 14-16.

I was wondering if anyone had attemped or had any info on hardware mounting locations?

Thanks for the positive remarks you guys are awesome emoji

If you are thinking a GSX tranny and transfer case would bolt up to our cars, you're wrong. However this is an on going topic in the advanced discussion section, so here is the link and read up.

How totalled is this car????? Swapping a 420a with a 4g63 is a lot harder then swapping body parts from a GS to a GSX. All I am saying is why not do it the other way and put you GS parts that you have on the GSX... What is wrong with the GSX to make it totalled?

Totaled as in crashed very hard...

i am talking cheapest route to turboed AWD, and fixing a damaged GSX with possable frame damage is more expensive then ripping out the guts and puting it in my GS...that is engine and all.

All i am wondering is that the mounting points SHOULD be the same right? I mean the DSMs all came off the same line, stripped to their parts they should all be the same shell..

then how hard could it possibly be to take a GSX and all its go parts and stick it in a GS?

Think about the price/performance potental, comnpared to building a GS 420a

from an onlooker, i'd say go for it and see what hilarity results, if nothign else then it'd be worht a shot and you can always go back...BUT

i'm not exactly sure even the mounting points are the same..so say you stripped teh car down to the frame, for argument's sake...then you have to replace every "totalled" part on the GSX, possibly obscure ones that you'd have to get from satan, and put them all on the GS....woudl buying the new parts offset the cost of just buying a GSX? You might want to take a note of every totalled part, or usable part, to see how much you'd have to buy to replace the GSX engine/drivetrain in the first place..

matt

P.S. some stuff would be easy, though, like exhaust, header, turbo, etc...no need to buy OEM...

wouldn't he have to change the bottom of the car as well?? I thought that GSX had a diff undercarage than the GS's and GS-T's. I know the fuel cell/tank is not he same.
But I have seen a shop in Queens, NY. they did the swap for rich kid that had a crazy GS. THis kid did so much to the body that he didn't want to sell the car and start over again. I saw them working on it when I took my 96' 240sx over there to sell. they told me it took them somewhere around 4 weeks of work to get everything runng. and thats just running. Lets just say the shop said "NO" to me when I asked for a price quote emoji

4 weeks?

well i figure that all that is damaged is the radiator and intercooler, which would be replaced anyway.

You are correct, the fuel tank and diffs and crossmembers are different..but thats just a matter of unbolting and putting on the new ones.

Dino? Anyone know about the powertrain mounting points?

Also all the 4g guys, early 95 or 99 are the best years for anti-crankwalk right?

the cheapest way to a turbo'd AWD is to buy a first gen... this is going to be a huge pain in the ass... I doubt Dino will even reply to this... most people on this board are to the point that they just skip over posts like this because it's been discussed over and over. HOWEVER: if you have VERY cheap access to this car, it may be a worthwhile thing to try, but don't think of it like putting a GSX drivetrain into another eclipse, think of it as putting a GSX drivetrain into a Dodge Avenger and you'll have a much better idea of what will be involved.

Hopefully someone knows this for sure, but the actual underbody of the GSX may be different than a FWD. The GSX chassis may have a indentation for the drive shaft, and also, mounting points for the diff, ect.. The gas tank is different too as mentioned above. IMO, your biggest obstacle is the underside of the chassis. If there is no room for the drive shaft on the GS, then i'd say its not worth it. But i have never really taken a peek of the GSX chassis..someone should know for sure. If you have everything major to do the swap, and it will bolt up without too much fabrication, i'd say go for it. But be prepared for it. Be ready for the bullshit that will inherently come with it. If you are patient, have the time, dedication, and money to do it, then i'd say do it. I like different emoji

"So, i figure get a wrecked GSX, remove all the 420a components and replace with all the GSX components."

Alot harder than it sounds. Buy a chilton eclipse manuals, they show all the different systems of our cars. Any EVERY system is different for the gsx. True, alot (not all) of the mounting spots will be there, but the amount of change would be ridiculous. Under carriage wise, both suspensions would need to be replaced, all four breaks, the entire exhaust, the fuel tank, and everything in the engine bay. I am not saying this in not doable, but if you spend that much money doing this, you will in essence have a stock gsx, where if you spent this money on the car as it is, you would smoke a gsx.

Rear of the car is completely different. I dont even want to imagine the wiring difficulties in a task like that.

4 weeks... for weeks for a shop full of professionals who work on this all the time, not an amateur in the garage.

You will not only have to rewire the engine bay, but inside the car, swapping instrument cluster and interior wiring harness. You will essentially have to strip the car down to nothing to do this.

If the radiator was damaged, the front crossmember could be bent and in need of replacement. The entire rear suspension set up and gas tank has to go. Essentially the body, your interior trim panels and your seats can stay. Everything else will have to be swapped or modified. And if the car was totalled I'm willing to bet you'll find other pieces broken than just the radiator.

I guessing you will have to get some welding done for side engine and trans mounting.

Do not even contemplate attempting this if you don't have another car. This will not be quick and you will need a car to drive around in.

i dunno, im guessing it was 4 weeks cause when I went back a month later, the car was still there sittin on the lift. Dunno, maybe they were doing something else to it, but im pretty sure it was the conversion since the entgine bay was still empty. And about professional,, I dunno how pro they are.. if it takes them that long to figure everything out. Or maybe they just ran into some problems and were waiting for some part that they didn't expect was needed.. who knows, Haven't been back there since then cause well.. my 240 is sold emoji
