I need to buy a EGT gauge this weekend for my turbo install next weekend. I've been searching the Autometer EGT gauges and some say they have a "probe" and some don't .. and of course there's a price difference. This might be a newbie question, but what the heck is the probe and do I need it? Anybody got a nice EGT they really like?

The probe is placed in one of your exhaust mani runners to measure the temperature. The Autometer "Pyrometer" gauges come with the probe, but the actual Exhaust Gas Temperature gauges don't, you have to buy the probe separately. I'm not sure what the difference is between the 2.
I have the Autometer Ultra-Lite Pyrometer. Works fine for me!

I judging from what your saying that I have to have one of these. Is it the type of thing I could pick up at Autozone or something too, or do I have to get it from Autometer? Thanks for the input so far.

Every company that makes gauges (Autometer, VDO, Westach, Greddy, Apexi, etc...) makes an EGT probe for their gauges. I'm not sure how interchangeable they are. I would suggest buying the probe from the same company that you bought the gauge from.

I'm not usre about the interchangability of the other gauges/probes, but I know a lot of people who use the Autometer EGT gauge with the westach probe. Most of them say that the gauge responds quicker with that probe, and as a side bonus, the Westach probe is like 25 bucks if I remember right.

Sender, probe, same thing different name. That has everything you'll need.
