I was thinking of going all motor for my 97 talon. What are your opinions on this? I'm wanting to start out with a high flow muffler, cold air intake, headers, cam gears and bored TB. Then later on when I get enough money saved up I want performance cams and high compression pistons(10.5:1 maybe?). What do you all think about my crazy idea? Are there any better/cheaper mods I could make first? Thanks for everything...SD

Underdrive pulley, other than that sounds like you are on the right track. Oh and I would do the cams and cam gears at the same time, since you have to tear it all apart to do either.

10.5? Go with 12.5CR pistons.

there are few who chose that path and the one who stride on has evil befallen upon him. (Sorry I've been reading a lot of Lord of the Rings). Bear in mind that our cars are not like Hondas and Nissan with their Vtec techonolgy. Even going all motor like that will be epensive just to reach 15's. Your best gains will be from the AFX underdrive pulley and Howell's ECU. Those and a cold air intake will be your noticeable gains. Which is why so many of us have gone turboed. Choose wisely....our list of allies grows thin. The age of all motor is dying. Who will we put our trust in? Howell automotive? All they care about is their untested block and Neons. It is turbos whom we'll depend on.

p.s. You guys need to pick J.R.R Tolkein's other books about middle earth. This guy was a genious. He devoted his life to create a whole culture and a whole other world. I've read over 2000 pages of his work in the last week and half...and that's with no pictures besides a map of middle-earth.

Witha manual tranny car, and RS wheels/tires, try less than $500 emoji

GS-T muffler, CAI, an UDP and a good launch on a nice day should be enough for high 15s. That will run you about $410 if you install stuff yourself. Not bad if you ask me.

The CAI and AFX computer will help the most. The muffler, UDP, and well tuned cam gears will also help. They will be incremental improvements, but all taken together they add up to some nice gains.

i'd wait on the header and get the UDP as well. the OE exh mani is good enough till you're well built motor with/or high flowing cams or NOS.

There are tons of neons running the 12.5:1 compression ratio on pump gas. The race 420A's are running 12.5:1 on race gas at 30 psi.

The famous high compression turbo thread even talks about how 12.5:1 with 5 psi on 93 octane is possible.

It's all in the tuning. If you want to throw it together and go, it's gonna blow. If you plan it out and spend all the time and money that will be needed, you can do it fine.

Exactly Kyle. 12.5:1 sould fine on 93 octane and stock ECU, maybe have to pull a couple degrees of timing to be safe. But you shouldn't be running high compression without that ability, or know that you may need it. With the AFX ECU teh Neon guys usually pull about 6* to 8* of timing if memory serves, because they advance the timing. Get fuel and have some timing control, if you know what you are doing, then all is good.
