I was just wondering if you have to buy a longer bolt to replace the stock crankshaft bolt in order to take off the AFX UDP? Becuase I used the stock one, but its to short now, so did you have to buy a longer one? Ive moved the pulley off a lil but not much, im not to shure how much more I have to go, but...hopefully yall can help

Yeah, you need a longer one. If you go searching through the archives you'll see all sorts of havoc by not using one...like getting a socket stuck in the hole or having to cut it off - stuff like that. I got mine long-bolt a local hardware store, it was a John Deere part.

I have a rod that I use. It is smaller then the I.D. of the tap for the crank bolt. It works, but I only use it after the crank pulley bolt is at it's limit, so it doesn't get pushed too hard.

i faked it using a socket. it almost got stuck in there though...

edit: that didn't make much sense. i should have said "i faked it by putting a socket in before the bolt while trying to get it off."

i drew it out as far as i could with the stock bolt and a puller then used a pry bar to take it off the rest of the way. to get the afx on i used the stock bolt and some washers as spacers (hiting the bolt with a hammer) untill it could grab enough threads to use a wrench to draw it on the rest of the way...i would have just used a longer bolt but lowes was closed at this point so i had to be resourcefull. it can be done tho.

Just a side note here, b/c I've installed four different brands of UDPs. I HATE the AF/x UDP! That thing is a bitch from hell! You won't have this trouble with other UDPs. Good luck Michael... you can get the longer bolt at Home Depot, the Lowes here in Franklin didn't have it.

Yup get one about an inch longer in stock size, threading etc... If memory serves it's an M12 and I'm not sure on pitch maybe 1.50? Bring your stock crank bolt with you and compare.

*edit* Buy as hard a bolt as you cam find grade 10.9 preferably. Below 8.8 and you'll snap it, I've used an 8.8 once and I could feel it starting to stretch, really look for that 10.9.

No, you don't HAVE to use a longer bolt to remove it.. use a 1/4" drive ratchet extension with a 6" length. A longer bolt makes re-installation easier - less beating on your thrust bearing with a deadblow hammer.

Hmm... yeah.. didn't work for me, tried it, broke the extension. Just buy the bolt.

I agree.. while the extention worked for me, it ruined the extension. Crushed the male end with the bearing in it. emoji

haven't tried putting the UDP on yet... was gonna wait till the engine is back in the car so i don't accidentally damage it when droppin the motor in.

Anyone know anyone who can help me tune this in the Pittsburgh area (Greensburg)?

You'll need a 150mm long M12, grade 10.9 bolt... really long. If you have trouble finding that, you can usually find a threaded rod that will do the trick. Be careful hitting or prying the aluminum AFX pulley... it bends REALLY easy.

YES! use the longer bolt. IF you try to use the stock bolt to pull the pulley on, you may not have enough thread of the bolt into the crank, and it could possibly strip the crank threads out. Just do it right. You dont want to mess up your crank threads. Thats one headache i wouldn't want.

note: all these companies that sell the udp for our cars are moronic. they should have spent about 2 more seconds on R&D and realized that they'd have more returning customers if they would just supply the cheap bolt with their product. damn now thats some baby shit, everyone should start an aftermarket auto-parts company, morons can do it.
