#48913, "codemasters and guru's need your help"

ok just got back from autozone to check my code for my CEL. well this is what i got:

1. P0401 EGR system failure
2. P0171 fuel system lean

last i went there i had P0352 ignition coil #2 primary circuit and figured that's why my CEL was one. well it's not. so i'm not really sure why these two codes are on. my egr was off then put back on for emmissions back in jan. so i'm assuming it's either dead or leaking or clogged. as for the fuel system lean, i'm thinking dirty injectors since my s-afc settings are at 0 accross the board. any help would be appreciate emoji

for the lean code, check your fuel filter, injectors, maybe try toying with your safc. just a couple ideas

ok just talked to my uncle who's a mechanic and he mentioned this:

two things to do first for the fuel system running lean:
1. fuel system cleaner/injector cleaner (stp or havoline)
2. have the car serviced (clean injectors with a machine and have fuel filter changed)

if 1 doesn't work then i'll do 2. but i'll save myself some money and take off the injectors and just have them clean them and put in the fuel filter with my uncles help. and other inputs will be helpful. mainly for the EGR system failure.

ok, i talked to my buddy and he said he thinks that it could be the fuel pressure regulator acting up. i did richen up my afc and got some better readings and noticed a little more pep from the car but it's still running lean. anymore ideas guys? TIA.

Your fuel system lean can be from the EGR failure, If the valve is open (stuck open, it happens)all the time you will set a lean code, thats how the EGR flow test works , when the solenoid is activated the ECU searches for a lean condition to verify proper flow back into the intake

Id start with the EGR problem, that will probably clear up the lean condition, dont just start throwing parts at it.. fix what the car is telling you to fix... EGR

TIA

well it depends, if you need to pass emissions you need to fix the egr system first by replacing valve/solenoid and clean out all vacuum lines and the big metal egr tube.

if you dont care about emissions block that sucker off, you will however always have a CEL for EGR problems though after that (either the egr system failure which sometimes leaving the solenoid hooked up will fix that or you will get the insufficient EGR flow which cant be fixed without some electronics (im working on a device that will send the o2 voltages a little lower when the solenoid is operating causing a lean condition at the ECU so it wont trip the code), if you dont want any cel's fix the egr.

Well passing emissions without an EGR depends on where you are. If you don't have a NOx component that is required to be a certain level then block it off. Because the EGR system lowers NOx emission at the expense of raising COx emissions some. That's why the EGR system used to be a California only thing.

i don't have emmissions again until jan and by then i don't even know where i'll be stationed. plus i'm going to get s scan tool eventually so when i do go to emmissions i'll just clear the codes if they come up.

as for the car now, i blocked off the egr line, richened the afc, and went for a test drive. it actually feels strong again. so as for now, i'm doing ok. still not sure why it's not running as rich as it should but it's doing good for now. still thinking fuel filter, clogged injector, or fuel pressure regulator acting up. anymore advice will be appreciated.
