#4824, "Weird Hesitation? RPM's won't move while driving..."

Hey all, over the weekend, I got this weird hesitation twice. While still moving, but slowing down, when I hit the gas, the rpm's stayed at about 1000 rpm and would NOT move at all. The car did not accelerate or jump rpm's until a couple seconds later. The first time was while slowing down for a red light to about 25 mph but then it turned green - hit the gas, and nothing...

The second time was on a right turn on a green light where I didn't need to come to a complete stop. After the turn, I hit the gas and the car didn't move again for a couple seconds. Any ideas what might cause this? Thanks.

What sensor might it be?

Also, Mike at RRE suggested making the plug gap even smaller to 0.030" since I have a milled and ported head (higher 10.6:1 compression). The gap was already set at 0.033" I believe. It's weird, because the hesitation only happened twice at low 1000 rpm's...

I can't find the service sheet. Really not much help if I don't know what sensor. Sorry man. You could get a diagnostic test run on the engine...

It was probably a little over 1000 rpm, but definitely not over 1500. The auto tranny is kinda slow in downshifting, so it was probably in third gear slowly down to about 25 mph. Actually, now that I think about it, anytime I hit the brakes and slow down, the rpm's will drop a lot because it still stays in that higher gear and doesn't down shift until the last minute. For example, it doesn't downshift to first gear until a split second before I come to a complete stop (about 5 feet before completely stopping you can hear it make that nasty shift noise - chrysler minivans make that same nasty noise when almost coming to a complete stop, probably just the chrysler tranny).

I had this problem with my Galant. Same exact symptoms. I had at the dealer going through the transmission from top to bottom, and they found nothing. My next step was replacing the Pulse generator on the transmission (speed sensor). This is what controls the shifting, and it made ZERO difference. I have searched for the answer high and low, and the only thing anybody can say is "it's got to be a sensor somewhere". Dont you think they would find that on the diagnostics machine if there was a bad sensor? This is what I had done to try to fix it before:
Professional tune up
Fuel system treatment
Remove and clean throttle body
new timing belt
new fuel injectors
Pulse generator
Transmission service

So let me save you some time, money, and aggrivation. Simple maintenence is very important but is not the case with this problem. I have spent over $5000 in maintenance and preventive maintenance rrepairs in the past year and the problem keeps getting worse.

WOW that really sucks...how often does it happen to you? I don't think its the tranny, because if it was, the car would probably rev, but go no where. Since it won't rev (rpm's stay constant), I'm thinking it may have to do with the ignition? Like how some cars with bad plugs or wires will feel a hesitation at high rpm's. But since this happened at low rpm's, I don't know exactly what might cause it. It's really weird...when does it happen to your car? Moving, stopped, or??

Im not sure on the eclipse but my father has a buick that did the same thing, it had a electronic module that acts like a vacuum module on older cars. the older cars need the vacuum to shift, but most new cars use electronic type, i just unpluged the connector and it works great. he's put about 90k on it w/o a prob. some GM products are known for it. But it must be the same type of module for the eclipse.I know they use a kick down servo switch but I DONT know if that controls your passing gear, or down shifting of the tranny, or both. There is also a range switch that might be doing it but then again im not sure exactly what this does, I've got a m/t so I hav'nt done much research on the auto.

It happens to me the same as you. When slowing to a stop sign per say, if I dont make a complete stop, it dogs real bad and won't go anywhere until you push the pedal far enough to kick in the passing gear. But if I come to complete stop, it snaps your neck when you take off. I know everone that I know with a Galant or Eclipse Auto experiences this and yet noone has figured it out yet. It is realy aggrivating that I pay my dealer $85/hr for labor, and they can't find a bad sensor so they tell me that my car is normal.

Mine does sorta what you're talking about...I took it to the dealer while it was still under warranty and they sent me over to a tranny shop....the shop said that it doesn't seem like anything's wrong with the tranny....seems like maybe an engine thing. might just be fuel filter or something cause mine happens when i'm going like 30 mph or so and push the pedal a little further to get it to downshift....guess I'll either change the filter...or buy the '96 GS 5 spd. that i found emoji I miss shifting emoji

Ya know... my car is doing exactly the same thing! Also, I have a horrendous stumble (intermittantly) at high RPMs. Sometimes she is tough to start, with the engine turning over fine, but it takes a second or two to start. Also, a couple of times, I have pulled into my driveway, put the car into park, and the car shuts off without me touching the key.
If anybody knows, let me know!

Well, I finaly got an answer and it was one that I was expecting. I had plans to do the exhaust with a new cat.con. back. I posted on the Galant message board and was told the cat.con was getting clogged and should be replaced. I am gonna have it done next week, I have already purchased a CATCO cat.con from www.summitracing.com. It was a direct fit performance model for mitsu cars for $100. I will let everyone know if it solves the problem or not.

Yeah really, keep us posted...My car does all the weird downshifting stuff you guys are talking about when coming to a stop sign. Also. my car bogs down at 80 MPH and stays at 4,000 RPM while the pedal is to the floor and if I let off of the throttle a little bit the car surges and takes off like a bat outta hell

Well this happens to me everyday and can be reproduced at will. I had the cat con put on and the K&N FIPK. I did get a performance boost, however the hesitation is still there. Well my last resort is to take it to the dealer and have them run a diagnostics again. For a common problem I cant beleive the dealer knows nothing about it.

From looking at past recalls for my car and others for that matter. It seems this has been an ongoing problem with Mitsu. automatics. The problem for me is, the tranny is getting stuck between first and second gear, no matter if it is upshifting or downshifting. Mostly happens when downshifting, not wanting to drop to first. Looking at it from this point of view, what else on the auto tranny would cause this besides the pulse generator (speed sensor). I have already replaced that part. I know my car has the pushbutton OD with a feature on the tranny that makes it shift out of OD automaticaly, without turning it off, when the speed drops below 45.

Well Mitsu still cannot find a problem. Last resort was the TPS. They wanted $140 for just the part. I was gonna buy it , then looked and noticed it was adjustible. So I went to service Dept. and asked about adjusting it. He said it's easy. Hook it to a Volt meter and it should read 600 milivolts. So I had them check it and it was fine. I am so stumped, I have crossed every t and dotted all i's an still came up empty handed. My parts guy sain a select few ccars had seperate tranny ECU's but lucky me, I wasnt one of then. Those things are $600. Well screw it, I am trading it off for another Nissan 240.
