#4799, "Tips for tuning HRC Stage 2 kit?"

LAST EDITED ON 08-Jul-01 AT 08:59 PM (PST)

*sorry for posting this in the wrong forum, admins please move it to the turbo section..thanks.*

Ok so after much cussin' and bitchin' at hrc's FMIC setup and fuel system, we got my buddy's car running tonite. (drop in with minor modifications my ass!)

First the fuel pump that hrc provides is crap IMHO it started leaking fuel from the + power terminal. So we bypassed it and ran just off of the stock fuel pump and ajusted the pressure regulator (which does work for a change) to keep a good 45psi-60psi in pressure at idle, but the car idles really rough and will die out like not enough air is going into it.

So we checked the turbo, and it is pumping air through at idle, mostly fan-speed, nothing terrific but again that's at 2k rpm.

We checked to make sure oil is going to the turbo, and it is (found that out after a squirt in my eye lol)

At idle, the o2 sensor voltage is going up and down around .3 and .5.

So that may say that the car is running lean, but the ajusting the fuel pressure "up" doesnt fix the problem.

We are also running a safc and got it configured for "default" setting from gtuned's website and we also played around with it a bit but not much change happened.

My question to you is: what basic settings did you run with the SAFC? What troubleshooting steps did you take when first running your engine? did you initially get some small/mild smoke out of the surface finish of the hrc exhaust manifold? Did you have any problems with hrc's inline fuel pump?

After some thought tonight, i'm going to tackle the following points/options tomorrow:

1) Put in my 255lph high-flow in-tank fuel pump. Check to see if o2 voltage goes up as well as finetuning with the fpr.

2) Check the spark plugs (totally forgot about checking them...doh).

3) unhook cat from exhaust system to see if that is becoming an excessive restriction to the exhaust flow (thus the reason we are not seeing *any* boost at low rpm (2500-3000) levels. This is mentioned in the hahn manual but i'd take this as a last step. Excessive restirction on the exhaust system (i.e. bad catalytic converter) causes the turbo to not be able to spool up.

BTW, the setup is:

-Dodge Avenger '96 I-4
-Hrc stage 2 kit with fmic option
-270cc/min RC engineering injectors
-Forged pistons/rods
-S-AFC with 06 In/06 Out and 35%/50% throttle settings initially

Thanks for any advice guys.
