Ok today i was talking to a mechanic that specializes n engine modifications. He offered me a Cyclone Engine for the nonturbo eclipse. He's offering about 600 for it. What is so special about this engine? Has n e one else even heard about it? What are the benefits of getting this instead of keeping the 420??

Never heard of it, and unless someone else has, do not go back to that guy. The only thing I can think of, and this is really reaching, is that he is gonna charge you 600 bucks to put that little thing in front of the throttle body that swirls air (I think one of them is called a cyclone). emoji

And no 4g63 engine will swap into our cars, and if this guy can get a motor out of an evo for $600, please give me his name and number.

Yeah, its a jdm turbo motor. I know 2 people with it. One of them are having problems with it, and they were installed by the same shop. It will be a MAJOR pain in the ass for you to put it in since you have a 420a - new motor, ecu, tranny blah blah blah.

from what I've read, the Cyclone was a variation on one of the manifolds and makes that engine perform (get this) exactly like the others. I've never heard of anyone getting any performance gains from one and I even think some of the DSMs over here came with that engine too. (Otherwise, how did joe grease monkey come across it?)
I am no expert, but I'd tell him you'd rather just get the 6-bolt 4g63 (if that's what your after) out of any 1G and save some cash. Good luck!

yea, the cyclone is the JDM 4g63 but like ^^^ said its only the manifold thats different, pretty sure the engine is just a plain ol 4g63. this is just like swaping in a turbo engine.....its still a 4g63, just no turbo...so in other words....no, dont buy it

the cyclone is a "JDM" 4g63...it has a different manifold and some have yellow top injectors, its rated at 220hp compared to the us 4g63 210...even though, i wouldn't bother with it...you can swap it in but it would be easier to just turbo the 420a....

Actually many of Mitsubishi's engines came with the Cyclone intake manifold. Even as small as the non-turbo 1.8L and 1.6L engines. It is a butterfly valve that controls 8 intake runners instead of the normal 4. By closing and opening the valves, you can switch between longer and shorter runners. This increases torque and horsepower at various RPM.

I wonder if the EVO 4+ motor would bolt in. It is on the same side of the engine bay.... emoji
