I have to get my car up and running soon, and I'm too lazy to go through all the fluids in the car to check where the leak is coming from. So hopefully someone would know. There is a leak, located under the transmission (5sp) and it contains a dark reddish fluid. I would like to know where this is coming from. Thanks.

The only thing that comes to mind is power steering fluid. The rack and pinion might be leaking someway.

have you had your trans worked on recently? they might have put ATF+4 in it... that's what they put in mine. kind of a good thing so far or else i'd think that it was just oil that i was leaking instead of trans fluid.

what i mean is it could be trans fluid if the place put ATF+4 in it.

yo derek,
if you look at your tranny, does the oil seem to be dripping from the low est part of the transmission and then drippin on the floor and the crossmemeber? does your tranny housing look like it has a thin layer of oil on it? a few months back my car was doing the same thing, but when i replaced my clutch i removed the outdrive seals from the tranny and replaced them with new ones and i have not had a problem since. the leak is probably coming from where the axles go into the transmission.

like ^^^ said, axle shaft seals. that's where mine is leaking, and has been leaking.

sorry for "borrowing" the post, but how hard is it to change the seals yourself? and how much do they cost?

Hey James or anyone that would know,
What is the fluid that is leaking out? Will it be coming from the transmission?

Wow, that axle seal thingy (forgot what it is called already, and im too lazy to go back and look) ounds like it may be my problem. I was thinking that it was the head gasket, but it is dripping from the lowest part of the trasnny, like you said. I'll have to look into that. And I'll ask the same question...how hard is it to change yourself?
