ok i have a non turbo manual 96 eclipse.... never really drag raced, and i hear everyone talking about redline every gear???? ummmm won't i eventually either blow out my engine or just totally demolish my tranny? what are some suggestions to keep my car from being in the shop as often? when it comes to drag racing? rev limiter 7000, so what is best when it comes to shifting gears while drag racing

now that you know H A Y B!!!

when drag racing our cars..its a good idea to run the gears all the way to at least 6800... and when most of us non-turbo boys drag at a track we end up crossing the line at the top end of 3rd gear or about 85-90mph...i, along with most of us on here drive pretty hard on a daily basis...after 50k miles that I have put on the car driving hard..it sees 6000+rpms several times daily, it still runs very very strong...yea redlining it will eventually break stuff...but its gonna take a long long time...

check the stats on our engines...they peak horsepower at 6000 rpms and peak torque at 4800 rpms. So while racing, you want to stay as close to that power band as possible.

btw, racing and cars breaking go hand in hand. you can't have one without the other...imo if you are going to race your car you better be ready to fix it too

Our engines, along with most other newer four cylinder engines, are made to rev high. Beating on the engine will wear it out sooner, but your not going to destroy the engine by bringing it to redline. Lagging the engine below 2k is probably worse than bringing it up to 7k. The main thing that your stressing by reving high is the top end. If you rev too high the springs won't be able to snap the valve closed fast enough, but as long as you stay below the rev limiter your fine. On the other hand, engines with v configurations, especially older ones that don't have ohc's can blow from reving too high.

Once you drag race it you will see what we mean emoji

>just totally demolish my tranny?

After 200 drag runs and 3 seasons of racing and redlining it every time (not to mention red lining it when I drive at times), the engine is just fine (it seems to be running just as strong as ever), the tranny is fine, the stock clutch is fine (helps if you don't slip it on the launch), and it will probably keep going like this for quite a while at this rate.

Once you get a few bolt ons and the car breathes a little better ont he top end, red lining it in every gear is what you should do at the track.

yea, you cant go "easy" on your car and race it....if your gonna shift at 5k to prevent engine "damage" you might as well just not race. our cars thrive in the top end, and are made to be hi revving...or else we wouldent have a 7200 rev limit
