It just lets warm air into the intake manifold correct? Im thinkin about usin breathers for the valve cover.BTW, is there noticable performance gain from usin breathers? Thanx

LAST EDITED ON 06-Jul-01 AT 03:34 AM (PST)

The Engine has to BREATHE. To be pollution free, the engine has to CONFINE all its nasty stuff inside it. So, instead of letting all the blowby and junk in the engine oil pan and bottom end of the block to escape into the atmosphere, it is rerouted and burnt in the engine combustion chamber. THAT is why all the extra hoses and valves are on an engine. The PCV is where the junk enter the intake and is consumed. It is a one way valve so incase of a back fire at the intake, it does not allow it to get back into the engine block and BLOW IT UP with all the combustables in there. The Breather Vent is there to allow fresh air to enter the engine and take the place of the polluted air being drawn thru the PCV and burnt in the combustion Chamber.
The UP SIDE of this system is that it helps keeps the inside of the engine clean of corrosive and combustable material. It draws all of them into the combustion chamber, keeping the fresh air in bowels of the engine.
Not fancy, just fact.

DSMLVR - very good explanation.

The breathers keep hot air out of yru intake and dirty air out of yoru intake. So the cooler air you can bretah in the better. The other source of the hot dirty air enetring yoru intake is... the EGR System (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) This is what really gunks up the intake manifold, which with restrict air flow and reduce the power and efficiency of your manifold, especially if you have a ported/polished intake panifold.

It seems as if my car runs better vented to the atmosphere.

It probably does. Less nasty mix of blowby pollutants in the combustion chamber. BUT - Not Smog Legal.
