#46327, "Problem getting off AFX UDP"

Man I was using one of those pulley removers trying to get this thing off. Well I had all 3 bolts threaded in the pulley all the way and was using a 10lb slapper bar to try and pop it off. Well after beating it for a while we eventually RIPPED out all 3 bolts. The pulley now has no threads emoji Of course the pulley did not budge at all. I ended up just breaking the timing cover to pieces and luckily I can see the timing marks on the crank sprocket so I'm able to redo the timing. I don't need to get it off anymore but does anyone have any ideas why it wouldn't pop? Could it be seized to the crank or something?

According to Autozone it was a harmonic balancer puller. I honestly don't know how to tell the difference so I just took their word for it. It also came with a bolt that is supposed to go into the pulley bolt hole and put pressure on the pulley to pop it off but that bolt was too wide to go into the hole.

The threaded portion in the middle of the harmonic balancer puller pushes against the stock crank bolt.

Thread the stock crank pulley into the crank sticking out 1/2"-1" from the pulley. Push against that with the puller until the pulley almost hits the crank pulley, then back out crank bolt anoth 1/2"-1", and repeat the process. You will need to get a crank bolt, the same thread and pitch as the stock one and about 1" longer (Grade 10.9). It sounds like you tried to pull the pulley with the stock crank bolt removed, and then the center bolt/push is just going to hit the pulley and push the center away from the outside of the pulley.

I also used a screw driver wedged between two of the smaller outer bolts that hold the puller onto the pulley, and braced the pulley against the frame to stop it from rotating as yourturn it.

OK I get it now. I did have the crank bolt out and there was nothing for the puller clamp to push on. You don't think I hurt anything by yanking on it do you?

Other then not having threads to pull with, I doubt that you hurt anything. As for taking the pulley off now, I would try to drill it out a little bit further, and tap it DEEP for some new threads. Another option is to drill it, tap it, and helicoil it. Either way, you need a way to screw three bolts into the pulley, otherwise, you will have nothing to pull against.

I don't think I'll ever try to take it off again. The only reason I wanted it off was to see the timing marks. Well now that I tore the timing cover off I can see them with the pulley on. That cover is such a PITA anyway.

I have never tried it, not knowing how much room is behind the AFX pulley, but you may be able to use normal bolts throgh the holes, and put nuts on the bolts, behind the AFX pulley, and try pulling it that way. You HAVE to pull that off in order to do anything with the timing belt (replace or adjust).

unless by cranking on it your bent/warped the pulley in some way, you should be okay. As for future removal, I would drill out and tap for bigger bolts, try to avoid helicoil here.

Why do you say that? I can line up the timing marks and move the belt around with the pulley on. I can't get the belt off but I don't need to. Am I missing something about the procedure?

Just saying that eventually it will have to come off to replace a timing belt.

When using a harmonic balancer puller, all 3 bolts have to be screwed in exactly the same. Also the center bolt needs to be perfectly centered. I tore apart like 12 bolts trying to get off my crank sprocket. Once I busted out a ruler and torque wrench to get each bolt perfectly aligned, it slid right off.

Well its really hard to loosen the timing belt tensioner plunger with the pulley on. The outer edge of the pulley will cover the bottom bolt on the tensioner. I suppose its possible to get at it, but it wont be easy, esp when you are tryig to set the belt tension.

Oh I see. I haven't even looked at how that tensioner works. Hopefully I can work around it. Thanks for the help everyone!!!
