#46294, "Car jerks and stutters"

I'm having a problem with my car. It jerks and stutters whenever you press the pedal any further than 1/2 inch. This only happens when it's in gear and running, at any RPM... it revs fine on neutral. I did the key dance and got two code 43's (cylinder misfire).

I then did a compression check and got 220, 215, 220, 220. I changed the spark plugs and plug wires, took it out on a test drive, and it's still jerking. I rechecked the codes and now got two more 43's, a 42, and a 31 (I assume the 42 and 31 are because of the compression check I just did?)

I bought a fuel injector cleaner which I'm gonna dump into the gas tank soon. Maybe my fuel injectors are clogged up? I was gonna buy a gas filter... but then I started thinking it can't be that since it revs fine in neutral. Can anyone suggest any other things I should look into? Thanks.

hmmm.....it sounds to me like an ignition related issue, but since you mentioned you checked that im not sure what to say. i would go back and recheck that part of it though. i had nearly the same problem a while back, the car was fine at idle and then as soon as i would depress the gas pedel it jerked and shook the car. ended up being the wires.

:shhh: i do cocaine :/shhh:

So the general consensus is that it's the coil pack? I'm gonna try that coil pack resistance check... but I don't have a very good multimeter ;/ Coil packs are $67 at Autozone.

Anyone think it might be the fuel injectors? I'm thinking about pulling those out and checking them just in case.

I checked the coil pack resistance and it's within spec. I reset the ECU, dumped the fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank, and took it on a long test drive. I got a CEL 43 again, and it jerked and stuttered its way to 45mph at every stop light.

If the coil pack is within resistance specs, can it still be faulty? What about the three wires that go into the coil pack... could those be bad? TIA, I appreciate all replies.

Look at O2 sensor, and/or clogged exhaust(Catalytic converter) as well. Other possibiities are bad crank or cam angle sensors.

Since you get no fault codes for ensors, try for clogged exhaust, or a clogged fuel filter, how many miles sine it was changed? (it's a 30k mi. maintanance item)

Got it! It was the stankin' ignition coil pack. I bought it at Autozone, but when I got home I noticed the plug is a little different. I rigged it up provisionally to test it out anyway, and the car works great now. Now all I have to do is find a new harness and splice it up. emoji

theres a difference between the 95 and late 96 and up. the 95 and early 96 have round holes in the plug whereas the late 96 and up have square plugs

late 96 and up

Thanks, but I got it taken care of. Apparently my car has the new type plug, so I went back to Autozone and let them now whassupp. I got it exchanged for a 97 coil pack and it plugs right in. emoji

Man, the same stuff started happening to me... I replaced my coil pack, plugs, plug wires in Jan(03). Any ideas? I've been told lately that Bosch Platinum isn't great with our cars, but could it be the reason? I just never had any major problems with plugs, especially in two months. My car jerks when I start moving in 1st gear, flooring it in any gear, and especailly making turns in 2nd gear. Any ideas?

When making turns? Maybe something fuel wise, like a fuel pump...

I did install new fuel pump and filter in last summer. If it was fuel pump, wouldn't it effect me every second i'm on the pedal? It runs fine after certain rpm. I did have a backfire problem a while back. It was strange, because the backfire went away whenever I changed out my plug wires. Any clue???

Copper, are you getting a CEL? That'd help alot by letting you know if it's an ignition problem or a fuel problem.

Yeah, it runs great now. They have them in stock. Funny thing is, the one with the round pins (95-96) is $67, while the one with the flat pins (97-99) is $85. Other than that it seems like the exact same coil pack.

Mannyyy> I'm not picking any cell so... what should i try next? Do plugs and plug wires go bad in two months? do coil packs go bad too? Some body once told me that it could be my o2 sensor going bad, but wouldn't i be gettin a cell?
