All...have you ever replaced the ignition coil?? Would a faulty ignition coil cause for backfires / choking of the engine -- just replaced the plugs --- they were good for a day (none of this choking) now its right back to normal...when i am in too high of a gear for the speed i am going ie 40 mph in 5th -- and try to accelerate the engine like sputters.
So -- how often is it recommended that we replace an ignition coil? Looks like modern performance sells and MSD one for us -- any thoughts?? Thanks.

How often to repplace... when it fails... A bad coil cold prduce misfire problems. I like my MSD as an upgrade, works well with the ignition amp. Just make sure you order the right part numbe for your year. Howell sells them as well, and so does summit, check for prices I got mine from Howell, which I think was the cheapest at the time.

Did the plugs you pulled look normal? Any build up? what color were they? Yes a faulty coil pack can give you misfires. How old are your wires? Do you have a multimeter? If so ohm out the wires.

The MSD ignition coil is a stock replacement type coil, and its much cheaper than the factory coil packs or coil packs you can get from local auto zone type places.
If you have a lot of mileage on your car and just want a piece of mind, replace it at the same time as your wires, plugs. Its an inexpensive part, and works just as well if not better than the factory piece.
We have them in stock and offer great prices and shipping on them. Give us a call if we can be of help. We would be happy to help you.

This may sound elementary, but check to make sure your plugs are in good. I didnt have mine in good enough one time and my car was backfiring like Hades had broken loose. It was running real shotty too. So just go make you torqued the plugs in good, or take the plug boot and turn it to the left, if you can feel the plug move then :o . Like I said, may sound elementary but I thought of about 100million other things before I tried the plugs being unseated properly.
good luck either way

PS - was the engine hot or cold when you replaced the plugs? And did you use any kind of anti sieze on the threads?

Thats what I meant, you dont wanna over torque those things and have to get a new head or get new threads in there! I usually just tighten them with the plug boot, take the boot out then torque em in there.

I had the s\exact same problem a few weeks ago. I would be going 40mph in 5th and when i try to floor it, it would sputter and then catch. I changed my plugs to ngk and it runs even better now. I am not sure if you have checked them, but the problem with your car, i had the exact same problem, and i went through two different pairs of plug(autozone) , which were different brands and they still wouldn't fix the problem, until i purchased the ngk.
