I'm fixing to get the 2.0 rebuild kit from howell automotive. what size pistons should I get? I want to get .40 over, but what compression should I get 10.5 or 12.5, and why?

stock is 9.6
10.5 will give you a 4% increase in power and you might be runnin a little lean

12.5 is too high without retarding timing and runnin 93 octane gas

If your just rebuilding without any chance of a monster all motor setup stick with stock complression, if your turbo'd get the 8 as the 8 is more forgiving if your not a good tuner.

Also, Howell doesn't carry .40 over pistons. BlackDogMotorsport.com does though.

Not to steal your post or anything but Im in the same boat as you. Why would you want to get your pistons 40 over? Why not just 20 over?
when I looked at the howell website they only had the 8.6, 10.5, and the 12.5. I think.

10.5:1 with 93 octane makes for a peppier daily driver, if you're not looking to make a beast out of it.

12.5:1 compression and 93 octane requires about 5* of timing taken out to not knock. Good for race, pita for street.

8.6:1 compression makes for a dog slow car, unless you're force-feeding it compressed air emoji

What do you mean by 5* taken out. 5 degrees retard on the exh or intake, or both. the way my cams are setup I cant realy retard my intake or advance the exh that much. I drive my car every day will 12.5 be too much where and tear?

Not cam timing, ignition timing. Like, with your MSD.

I have stage 2 crower cams, AEM cam gears, Kamikasi headers, 5 Zeggine catback, S-AFC, Port and Polish head, MSD DIS2-plus, AEM cia, 55 throttle body, PT lifters, and crower spings and retainers. I always run 92. gas

I personnally say go with 12.5:1, and I thought 5-6 degrees of retard was needed only if you had the timing advance of the AFX ECU?

Without a doubt run high octane. Plus the overlap of the Stage 2 cams should help prevent detonation a little.

10.5:1 is a little boost for the street. 11.5:1 would be better and shouldn't need any timing retard (you could always get Howell to special order 11.5:1).

Also why not go with the 2.2L stroker and stick with the .020" over bore? If you are looking for more displacement this is far better than boring more out.

I would get the 2.2 stroker, but I don't think they sell the kit. and I don't have the money to buy the short block.

If I did get 12.5 would I have to get a heavy duty head gasket.
what else would you recoment to get to prevent any problems down the road.

Have the ability to retard timing if needed, your ignition can, I'm not sure if you need a module or not. What year are you? I would say the AFX ECU if you have the right year or they come out with it... the cams will like the extra rpm.

I plan on investing in an MSD Knock Alert Sensor when I get up to that high a compression ratio.

I would also upgrade rockers to a set from Black Dog Motorsports.

And spent time on the dyno with the cam gears and S-AFC.

Then you may want to start looking for a good clutch/flywheel.

And for the love of God, when you rebuild it, get your internal balanced

I just got off the phone with Howell Auto. and they said the 2.2 only comes with the short block. I also look up the on my msd manual and I can retard the timing with out a module. I have a late modle 95 with OBD11. The last time I check they haven't made it yet.I would love to have an AFX ECU.

The tech at howell said I should go with .20 instead of .40 over and that I wouldn't have to use a up graded head gasket.

And yes I will have the internals balanced emoji

Hmm... when the stroker first cam out they were selling a kit...

You could always spend 4 times as much as the AFX and get a stand alone, which would be very nice, but it's more tuning and a lot more money.

Don't know what parts Black Dog uses... have to take a look.

Http://www.raceengineering.com Thats where we get all our internal parts. they have always given REAL good service, and keep shit in stock. a .040 overbore would be kinda useless, and make it harder for you to find pistons in stock. it wouldnt do much of anything in the way of extra power. they sell the Wiseco pistons, Eagle Rods etc... and id let your machine shop order your rod bearings for you, so you are sure they are the right ones.
