#44114, "Smoke out the dipstick tube after rebuild?"

rebuilt block had less than 200 miles on it, but if you pull the oil dipstick out, it smokes out the dipstick tube...

WHY??? is it just cuz the rings havent seated yet? is that normal?

Well man, thats not "normal"...if you broke the engine in properly(which would include getting on it pretty good the FIRST time you drive it, to seat the rings) then either they didnt seat properly, or you have other issues. if they arent seated by now... i hate to say it, but they might not ever get TOTALLY seated.

Can you feel blowby out of the valve cover? How about a compression test?

havent felt for blowby, cause its going to a catch can. (and i dont know if theres blowby, cuz i still had oil in it from the old engine..i emptied it, so ill be able to tell now after some driving)

i thought compression check didnt mean squat until after the break-in tho? like, theres no point in doing it yet, cause everythign hasnt seated

Ive been talking to another friend here, and hes saying the opposite, that until the rings are seated, that smoke is normal. Also said rings take 300-500+ miles to fully seat.

you always can check compression ( if you got some ) hehe.. you can check it right after your rebuild if you want. you got to bring it to all rpms on the 1st drive no boost only vacuum. from what i hear its sopose to seat within the 1st 5-30miles of driving, but dont boost till say 1500 to be really sure.. etc

I have to agree with Nitrous1997_RS, if they haven't seated within less than 50 miles than they are pretty much where they are going to be.

What piston/ring combo are you using? Are you sure you installed the rings to specs?

For everything to get seated it will take around 500 miles. Along with letting the engine idle for 20 min or so after the build and then drain it and put new oil in and filter. change oil again at 500 then start to get on it. if you get on it before they begin to seat the rings can be damaged due to blowby and will more than likey never seat properly if not broken in properly.

Before I had this car I had money.
