#43882, "trying to figure out how to remove engine from transmission"

and i'm pretty confused. i have all of the transmission bolts except 1 in the back removed, but i know that i need to unbolt the flywheel from the drive plate or something? how do i do this?

i know someone posted pictures of this a while ago regarding an access port to remove so i can get at the other side of the flywheel, but i can't find it. i thought i saw something weird up by the front motor mount, but it didn't look like much of anything at all.

also, i finally got a harmonic balancer removal tool (thanks for the advice dino). too bad i need to find a 3rd bolt so i can screw it fully into my AF/X UDP, the set only came with 2. after i do this, how do i prevent the engine from cranking? stick something in the flywheel? wait until i get the longblock out of the car and deal with it then?

(almost done) someone once mumbled something once about needing a propane torch to heat up the underdrive pulley enough to expand it so it slips off easier. do i really need to do this?

lastly, how do i get the thing back on? my first thought was to use a hammer but that sounds like i'd be walking the crank myself. any tried and true methods?

To unhook transmission from engine all you do is unbolt trans. from engine and pull. You have to take starter off, atleast I did. The flywheel and clutch assembly well remain attached to your engine. Atleast this is what I did. Maybe this isnt what your asking because it seems pretty straight foward IMO.

I assume you have engine out of the car? There are six main bolts that secures the tranny to the block. Two on the bottom (both of the ones on the bottom holds brackets to the block). Two on either sides (one in the front is right by the starter and one on the back is just below the cable brackets, near the oil sending unit) and the last two is on on top. All these bolts are visible, but you have to move around to find them. And yes you have to remove the starter if you are to seperate the tranny from the block. As far as taking the fly wheel off, just put the harmonic balancer puller on it (a 5 ton 3 jaw puller) and get yourself a bolt long enough to put into where the stock fly wheel bolt was. Get an impact wrench and watch that baby come out.

nah... the engine is still in the car. my plan is to take the engine out (with the head all assembled) and deal with taking everything apart after i get it out. i do not want to deal with disconnecting axels and suspention components for dropping the transmission, i want to leave it connected to the car.

I didn't mean to tell you to use the harmonic balancer for the flywheel, I meant use it for the pulley. Yes when you take the engine out, the tranny will easily come off. You'll have it off in a matter of 10 minutes.

He has an AFX pulley Mr. V - it comes of with a harmonic balancer puller, not a three jaw pullet. Three jaw will just break it.

Did you look and see how much room you are working with? I don't think it's even possible to push the motor any farther forward after unbolting the trans. I know when Michael and I did it, we just unbolted the axles from the trans (left them in the hubs) and pulled the whole assembly (very carefuly) out.

Good luck and have fun man.
