Yesterday for some unknown reason the plasic cover started making a terrible noise... I figured out it was rubbing on something inside, because when i would nudge it slightly towards the valve cover it would stop making that noise... I ended up just wedging a little piece of plastic between the plasic cover and the car to make it stop. Why would it do this? Could one of the gears be walking off? Or maybe the belt is hitting it. Any info would be helpful. -Chris b.

this seems to be a commen problem. mine does the same thing, especially when its really cold outside. its a problem with the cover itself and not the gears or belt, but pop out the little "window" to make sure everything looks ok in there.

Yeah i just had this fixed, when mitsu techs replaced the t-belt they somehow broke the rear cover which caused it to rub and make noise. I could stop it by moving the top cover towards the engine. Only fix is to replace ther rear cover, IE like replacing your tbelt time and work wise. I dont thinks its deadly, but it can't be too good. Although the techs decided to fix it for free and then not line up the cam gears right, lol. Fun times of the DSM world

mine rubs often a lot too. whenever it starts to make that awful noise, i just pull over and jiggle it around a little.
when i finally get my shortblock from howell and put the head all together, i will not be including that plastic POS cam gear "protection" thingy. should look a lot cooler with it off too

^^^yes. unless your willing to take your chances with a dremel.
(BTW...i was just kidding, youll rip into your timing belt if you try that.....just didnt want to have you get any ideas).
there are several people here who dont have the stupid cover and have never had a problem. also, i wouldnt worry if it does rub, the belt rides a few milimeters inside the cams, so the only thing rubbing should be metal, it wont cause you to thow the timing belt or anything.
