#43466, "im about to give up.... ecu problems... help a worn out brother..."

after about 5 weeks of down time, i finally figured out my my electrical problem. my computer decided to crap out on me... so i get another one, and my car drives fine for about a week.. then on my way home tonight, my car dies and its the same exact symptoms as before... the engine cranks, but will not turn over... i keep blowing the motor fuse and i would assume that it is the ecu again.... so now my question is, what could cause the ecu to short out???

im so tired of having my car down, and i am very close to calling it quits for my old 2gnt. all this and it is midterms week and i work.. its my daily driver and im screwed. i dont know what to do... emoji

which fuse did you blow again? Is it the alternator charging fuse? How about some exacts on which one. If it is the alternator fuse, its very possible that your alternator may be bad, causing high voltage spikes into your ECU. Just a thought there..may be a shot in the dark

I'm sorry to hear about this.
When I run into a problem like this, I always back-track to see if there was any incident that could be affecting my car. have you done any electrical work recently? stereos, alarms, guages, ect... any fender benders? have you replaced your battery or any engine parts recently? injectors ect... could they be taxing your ecu?

If not. start tracing wires. do it when you really have the time to look and think. especially where anything has been converted from stock. think about how your car is acting. is anything else out of the ordinary? stereo, speakers, headlights dimming, ect..

If you come up with any maybe's, throw them at us and let us do some thinking ourselves.

don't give up. it may be something simple or obvious. unfortunately only you know the car's recent history.

Just a thought. unhook you ecu and then plug it back in. if putting a new one in solved the problem for a while, maybe the connection going into the ecu is either loose or shorting. look for signs of wire fry.

peace

I'm currently dealing with the same problems on a customer's car. It's a 95 Talon, NT, MT. His problems started a few months ago and he's spent lots of money on this one problem. Found out the first computer was bad because he could tap on it and the car would crank back up. His symptoms are:

Vehicle will knock off while driving
Vehicle will not crank (starter engages, engine spins, no run though)
No Check engine light during bulb check when it won't run
No check engine light codes (DTC's)
Dealership scan tool will not communicate with computer when it
-------won't start
Memory keeps resetting causing RPM slow to drop on initial start ups
Computer shows "4 starts (give or take a couple) since memory reset"

This was all on a salvage yard PCM (Engine controller), on his stock one that was determined to be bad by tapping on it and it works... it does the same thing. Only thing I can figure is I've got two bad computers and suggested buying a brand new one so I have one known good computer. However, at $550 he's reluctant (understandably so).

What I've been told to do from a Mitsu tech is check the vehicle speed sensor for any problems there. If no physical damage can be found, attempt to crank the car. If it will not crank, continue attempting to crank it while unplugging the vehicle speed sensor(VSS). If the car cranks, then the problem is in the circuitry for the VSS or the VSS itself is bad. Now... I do understand that this component could be on the same circuit as the ASD relay. However, it does not explain the lack of CEL during bulb check nor the loss of computer memory. All my indications lead me back to the PCM.

Part of my diagnostics was to check to make sure that during the no start condition I had all three grounds present at the PCM connector, the 12 volt B+ supply, as well as the ignition output voltage was present. All of these wires checked properly which tells me again... the computer is supplied voltage and ground, it's just not doing it's job with what it's given.

Finally... the owner has been researching this problem as well and said that a salvage yard that has seen this problem before has been taking a harness out of a galant and using it. I have not heard of this, the Mitsu tech has not heard of this, there are no related TSB's to the no start condition nor this new wiring harness suggestion. If anyone has any information about this I'd really like to hear about it.
Thanks,
Doug

I agree to look into the grounds. That's what all my engine electrical problems have been related to. Either a hotwire to ground, or a floating ground problem.

At any rate, you might need to get another ECU. But first disconnect EVERYTHING you don't need. Pull fuses, remove pins from harnesses, pull off harnesses to ANYTHING that doesnt start and run the engine. Then connect things one at a time.

The galant ECU swap wouldn't work in our cars, that's for the mitsubishi built 4g63 engine.

CV- lemme know if you want me to come by and poke you with a stick until you get it working... I'm right up the 710 so whenever.

if tapping on the ECU will make it work, you should open it up and take a look. it could be that one of the soldering points wasn't filled right. it almost has to be a loose component in the ECU that could be fixed by resoldering it.

where to start emoji....

xtreme, the fuse that keeps blowing is the top left 30A fuse in the engine bay fuse box.. its the main motor fuse or something within those lines, i forget the exact name at the moment. i am fairly sure that it isnt the alternator fuse...

wikki, i have not done anything to the electrical system in a long time, and have not had an accident in even longer a time. the last i did was the fuel pump for the turbo kit, but it ran for 5 months with not a single problem. then the ecu went out the first time.. replaced it and worked fine for a week then died out tonight. nothing was has changed since the turbo kit was installed, and it worked fine for 4 months... i did some wire/short tracking for a while, but ran out of time (school,work,etc..) i gave it to a mechanic b/c i just ran out of time.. first thing he did was tap the ecu and he found no response.. he swapped the ecu with a spare and the car started up with no problems.. so we thought we found the problem.. but again, it worked fine for a week, the this one crapped out... and im tryin not to give up, but its damn difficult...

doug99rs... those are almost the same exact symptoms im having right now.. i had a hook up and got a new ecu from mitsu... its under waranty right now, so i wont have to pay for a new one.. i have not thought about the vss... question is, would that short out the ecu? i will look into it and let you know if i find something.. as i would hope you would do the same for me.

thedawg... im going to have the same mechanic look for shorts, starting with the grounds... he knows his stuff and i can trust him (hes a friend).. hes specializes in dsms and is a good guy... i would do it myself, but i have no time and i need the car back asap... you just might need to come down here and let me use that 1G emoji hahahha... damn beater car has less probs than mine!

anyone in so cal that has a spare car they dont need for the next week? let me know emoji

pray for me, taht i can get this car back and running properly soon... sorry for the length... any and all help is appreciated as always

Hey I had the same problem with my car it drove me nuts. It looks like you have a star kit on there. Take off the ic to throttle body pipe and look at the bottom of the wire harness that runs over the egr tube. Chances are it melted the wires like it did on mine. It drove me nuts trying to figure that one out. Oh yeah out of revenge you might want to block off the egr system. If not fix the wires and wrap a piece of heater hose arround them. Good luck and keep me updated emoji

Yes, there is a large bundle that runs next to the EGR pipe that contains both idle air and tps, as well as all four injectors, speed sensor, EGR actuator solinoid, both coil triggers and coil ground. perhaps some others as well. I can see some really weird shit happening if that started to melt through..

Dino's right. I've had big problems in the past with that pipe. I've had several wires melt to almost disintegration, and had my EGR solenoid almost totally melt away .

Suffice it to say now, I no longer have an EGR pipe or its related components.

So does that mean that you had a wiring problem with the EGR harness, or something different? Im still trying to figure out my problem with my car dieing too. Do you have a star kit?

Damn, I also had that same exact problem with my car a few months ago. Mine ended up being a ground wire that got melted to my motor. I went through about 5 of those damn fuses. Really sucked.

Yes I have a Star kit. It was not the egr harness itself but the wires that run next to the egr tube.

Thanks for the help, I checked the wiring that ran over the
egr pipe, and that was my problem too. We rewired the melted
wires and now I have a car again emoji

thank god! i finally found the problem!.. the fucking
capacitor on the side of the engine because loose and was
grounding itself on the ic piping... it was just dangling
there. and it every now and then, im sure that it grounded
itself bad enuogh to kill my first short out all the fuses,
and eventually killed the first ecu... good news is that my
second ecu is ok... i rewired the capacitor and everything
appears to be fine...

thanks for all the help everyone... im going to block off that
damn egr soon, so i wont even have to worry about future
problems...

and for the record, im running the NER kit... basically the
star.
