#42102, "Awful grinding noise coming from under hood upon start up?"

Sounds terrible. its so loud, you can hear it from like, a while away. thing is, it goes away once i start driving, and the cars been heated up. only upon cold starts does this happen. what can this be? its hard for the shoppe to diagnose it, since i can never get a true cold start for them. Oil was just changed a thousand miles ago. i think all fluids are ok, were checked by Mitsu 3000 miles ago. I have no clue, and it really bothers me guys....

Help!
Jim;(

If it's in a 2gnt, it sounds like an input shaft bearing in your transaxle. Are you a 5sp? If so, I'd bet that's your noise. Unless you want to swap a Neon tranny or rebuild that one, just deal with it.

Shit is all apart. Typical...

does it sound like pebbles rattling around right behind the driverside front wheel? if so than change your tranny fluid. It did the same thing in my car and after i changed the fluid it went away.

Hmm, i guess i could just change the Tranny fluid anyways, just to see. If its that major problem like the first guy mentioned, that could suck. this is all happening when the car is idled, and has just been turned on. It never used to do this. lately, its been worse when the weather is colder. i have no idea how that works. Im in the process of selling the car right now, so i hope this wont effect a possible sale. right now im figuring my only tactic is to let the car warm up before letting someone inspect it. drive-ability is not affected by this sound, somehow. ?? any more theories? Would Mitsubishi know what it was if i told them the suspected failing part?

And yes, i am a 5 speed. I guess as long as it doesnt affect driveability, its cool. it just sounds like the engine, or something under the hood is seriously hurting when i turn the car on. Thanks much for the suspected diagnosis man!

check with the easiest things first... poke your plastic timing belt sheild and see if your cam gears are rubbing against it.

if you drain your tranny fluid, you'll know if its the tranny emoji if it looks like used motor oil, or if it has anything in it like ground up metal shavings, or if the fluid itself has a metallic flake look.... say bye vye tranny... but i'd check other possibilities 1'st cause that tranny fluid ain't cheap! emoji

Then, if its not the tranny, i dont know. I've owned the car for 16,000 miles...and ive never drained/changed the Tranny fluid. Im not even sure if the previous owner did either. I might as well do it to be on the safe side. Ah well, the cars sold anyway emoji

My car does the same thing upon cold starts, it wont do it in the summer. Sounds like something rattling around. If I press the clutch in, it stops immedietly. I'll have to check the trannny fluid. Car drives fine, shifts fine and everything, just makes that horrible noise for about 5mins or so if it sits idle.

I drained and filled the tranny fluid, for safe measures the other day. sound is STILL there.

Yep, im guessing Erik is right...input shaft bearing. as long as it doesnt affect driveability, its all good. just really annoying. ah well. thanks guys!
