I just bought 16in rims and was wondering if I could just leave the stock tire size on the car (increasing the diameter by 2 inches) to help get rid of that nasty tire gap. I was told it would kill my acceleration, is this true? What about 1 inche? Thanks

Alright....just to let u know, a bigger diameter than stock will fuck up the speedo. it will say u are going faster or slower than you really are. If thats the way you want to go its all on you. Im not sure about the acceleration but it sounds right on. If I was gettin 16's I would get the right tire size and just lower it when i could, a lowered car handels better and looks better. You might catch some shit about doing this but again its all on you.

Yea, larger diameter then stock will make your speedo read slower then you're really going. I had 18's wrapped in 235/45's and I was wondering why I always passed people so quickly on the highway when i was only going 70 mph. Also, your acceleration will suffer a little. Basically it's like changing your final gear ratio. But I don't believe the speedo or acceleration changes that drastically though.

From a style point of view.. bigger tires are just gonna make your rims look smaller... and even though they may fill in the tire gap a little, it'll raise your car off the ground even more.

okay can some one explain then why the speedometer will be off if you go from RS 14"rims to GS/GST 16" rims if the rs speedo and the gst speedo both say 1025rev=1mile on them.

As far as i know, and anyone who knows more please step in a nd correct me, it's because it takes more time and energy to turn a 16" wheel 1 complete revolution than it would for a 14" wheel to turn that same 1 revolution. The speedo sensors on the wheels are calibrated to a certain standard and the bigger wheel would throw that off. This link is to a miata site but the logic still applies to our cars. If you punch in the info it'll give you an idea of how off the speedo would be.

Well, an RS 14" rim and a GS/GST 16" rim actually has the same diameter. The 14's are wrapped in 65's and the 16's are wrapped in 55's. Well, i'm not sure if those are the right specs for the tires, but if you took one of each rim and stood them next to each other, they would be the same height. Basically the thickness of the tire keeps the rims at the same diameter.

The problem is with aftermarket rims. Hmm.. how to explain this best. It's in the circumference of the wheel. Ok, let's say, if it were somehow possible to mount 2 inch rimes on your car... because the revolution is so small, the tires would revolve like five billion times faster then normal and the speedo would read a much faster speed. And vice versa for really large rims.

But keep in mind, if you can maintain a wheel diameter close to stock, you could still rock 18's and 19's... the tire itself would just have to be really thin.

yea, when you get the 16's you just get the correct size tire and it will be the exact same diamater. 14's will have thicker tires, 16 thinner to make up for the extra rim size. thats called plus sizing. you can get any size rims, and as long as the rim/tire combo is the same overall diamater, your speedo will not be off.

the stock 14 come with 185/70/14 or 195/70/14 and the gs/gst are 205/55/16. i was playing around with the miata tire size thingy and it is only .4 mph diffence. but i have 225/55/16 so my next question would is: isn't the 225# suposed to be width? if so why does that change the height if you go from 205/55 to a 225/55?

its all about the CIRCUMFERENCE of the wheel.... actually, the diameter from ground to top of wheel would be just as good....
