My car is ticking really hard when i go faster then 30-40 mph or even reving hard. It happened today on the highway when i try to gun my car to merge into the next lane. Itstead of picking up speed it started to rev really hard like it was staying in the same gear(even though it an automatic), and starts to ticking really hard. So when i finally got home i popped the hood and noticed the gasket underneath my valve cover was leaking oil. I've noticed it was leaking oil from before but, it was coming out from both sides of the valve cover. So i was thinking i had a blown the gasket. But why is there a ticking noise from the engine bay area? Do you guys think it could be anything else? A couple of weeks ago, when it was raining really hard in my area, i hit a couple of really big puddles really hard, so hard that it broke off the bottom part of the bumper. Could i have damage something else that caused this to happened? i've never had any problems with this car the three years i've own it, and had no experience working on any motors. I drive a 1997 RS Automatic. Any help on what the porblem is and how i can repair it myself (if possible) would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!THANKS IN ADVANCE

p.s- if it's possible also, could you tell me how much the parts would cost if i go out and buy'em (cheap, dirt cheap). and keep in mind i have no experience working with motors, so (if you can) break down the information so a moron ,like me, can understand.

well....i kinda searched it, and it sounds like either spun rod bearing or crankwalk. can i fix either of it myself?

Fixing crankwalk is easy. You can do it with hand tools.



If you crashed into something, and broke something in your engine, and the oil left your engine, and then you revved it to make sure, you probably spun a bearing. Go find a good mechanic, and about $1,000.

Don't take it to a dealer unless you're under 60k miles, have a completely stock car (no windshield wiper nozzle LED's), and an extra $4,000 just in case.

How about a spun bearing? Is it as bad as i think it is? i called the mitsubitshi dealer and they said that i needed to replace the whole engine.....is it true that it cannot be fixed?

The non-turbo engine (420a) doesn't get crankwalk like the turbo engines do (4g63). So you probably lost too much oil from your leaking valve cover gasket or other location, and caused you to spin a bearing.

You *could* fix it yourself, but with little to no experience working with engines, I wouldn't recommend it.

Um, like I said, a good mechanic can fix your engine for around $1k.

If you can find a good engine, installed, for less than that- replace your engine instead.

Oh, and once again... don't go to the dealer unless you're under warranty and have $4k spare cash lying around.

Ok, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm gonna try to answer this....

The crankshaft itself rotates on the main bearings that are in the block. And the rods rotate around on the crankshaft with rod bearings. These must be well lubricated to rotate smoothly.

When you run your car without enough oil, there isn't enough lubrication for the rods and crank to slide smoothly on the bearing, and the bearing becomes unseated and starts to move freely. This is BAD!
