I've been having problems for the last couple of weeks where the engine would cut-off when I am driving. I took it to a local Mitsubishi dealer, and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car?!?! Now my car won't start at all!!! When I turn the ignition, none of the engine lights come on except the battery light?!?! When I crank it, the starter turns but the engine won't come on?!?!

1st thing that comes to mind is check for trouble codes. check the fuel pump and MFI(ASD) relays. do the key dance thingy, if you get a 42 its the ASD relay or the fuel pump relay.

I had a similiar problem, if your check engine light isnt coming on time to get a new computer

If there is no check engine light then there wont be any code. If you dont think you can handle the problem find a independent mechanic that can put it on a computer test. (Dont go to the mitsubishi dealer.) Most places, atleast around me, well put it on there computer and run a full test for like 45 dollars per hour and it usually only takes about a hour. Its probably the best way to go since the problem could be multiple things. Once they find whats wrong then you can tackle it yourself or have them do it for you. It well atleast give you somewhere to start. Just my suggestion.

I actually already took it to my father-in-law's mechanic who hooked it to their computer and didn't get any type of error codes. He told me that it was probably related to my car alarm. I told him that my alarm doesn't have a starter kill option and that I had already disconnected it, but he still thinks it has something to do with the car alarm

Anyways, when the car first began to cut off, I also did the key thingy and didn't get any error codes. Does anybody know how much a new computer costs?

How does it shut off while youre driving?

Theres 2 kinds. Electrical, which means theres a clean cut and the engine doesnt die but rather shuts off with no sign of stress, just a clean shut off. Then theres mechanical, which is where the engine doesnt just shut off clean but rather dies, perhaps sputters, then is dead. Which is it?

EDIT: A new computer costs $200-$250. I got mine used for that price, but new to me Just do a search for companies that sell ecu's.

Dont get a new comp till youre sure. WHen my car would die in mid flight it was the comp. But your engine turning over suggests its no the comp, because if it were then the engine wouldnt turn over at all. Its like the engine isnt getting gas or something.

It seemed to be a clean cut-off, no sputtering. The engine would just turn off for a second, and then turn on again...but now she won't start at all. Besides the engine cutting off, when she's running, she run's really strong...so I'm more inclined to think it is something electrical.

You would figure that if there was something wrong with the ecu, the dumb Mitsubishi dealer would've been able to diagnose the freakin problem

O I didn't see that part. you can get a used ECU for about $200. i don't know what year or tranny ur car is but i got an extra one off of a 99 GS w/ATX that i can hook up pretty cheap if you need it.

Dying alternator?

Try to TRICKLE charge (DONT QUICK CHARGE a fully dead battery) your battery, then see if it runs for 10 minutes or so.

If it does, replace your alternator or at least check the belts and wiring to it.

I honestly think he has a short somewhere along his main engine wires.

welcome to the club... sorry to hear it tho... i too think that you have a short due to maybe a lose ground... snagged wire, or something... good luck to you.. my car has been out of commision for 2 weeks because of a short in my electrical system.

me too but i shorted mine out 2 days ago, i couldn't find it anywhere that was visible so i had to pull the dash. i should actually be out looking at it right now.
